Sparling can spend up to $13,000 for his campaign. This wasn't the first time Sparling has held such a function to raise funds. In June, both he and a Burlington councillor held a similar function in Toronto to raise funds for their respective campaigns. Sparling said he has known fellow Oakvillian McGregor for 10 years and both attend the same church. McGregor is also a member of the school council where the children o f both men attend. Sparling's wife is also a member of that council. Sparling called the column a red-her ring and said he'd stand on his record. The councillor noted that when Home Depot wanted to build a store on a site opposed by his constituents, he voted against it and spoke to the matter at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing. Sparling, a nine-year council veteran, was acclaimed in the last municipal elec tion, but this year is facing one opponent in Allan Elgar, current president of Oakvillegreen, a group of citizens con cerned about the development of 3,200 acres north of Hwy. 5. "Development in that area was a done deal," said Sparling. "The lands were des ignated (for development) by Halton Region in 1995 and we had to plan for it" Oakville Councillor Jody Sanderson, who was acclaimed in her Ward 4 local seat said the Globe column offered noth ing new to the debate over the lands m question and said Colin McGregor's name has been around town since the early days of Genstar, developers of the Glen Abbey area Sanderson said she has never accepted money from developers for a campaign, but said it wouldn't be unusual for po,acians to be approached, noting sorw ° aN" accepted money from them in the p i$ i She said as far as the lands north of Hwy. 5 are concerned. Town officials and councillors had gone over the issues with various groups in town, including Oakvillegreen. Three public meetings were also held to air citizen concerns before council voted to proceed with a development plan. Early Bird Prize - a BMW Z3 convertible!
