To mark the recent Holocaust Memorial Day (Friday, Jan. 27), Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) trustees Helena Karabela and Anthony Quinn visited a Grade 7/8 class at Oakville' s St. Gregory the Great Catholic Elementary School to discuss their trip last year to several countries in Europe, including Germany and Poland, and to respond to questions about their experience. "It still seems like a long time ago to me, but it was only 71 years ago that Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated. Today (Jan. 27) is the 71st anniversary. That' s why w e have Holocaust Memorial Day," said Quinn, noting the Holocaust resulted in the documented deaths of six million Jews. "It' s really not that far removed from us, even today, even though it might seem like a long ways." The idea for their trip was to visit prominent sites of the Holocaust, Quinn noted. That included stops at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, Germany, where Adolf Hitler was in power and finally, to Israel.
