The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Hum an Rights holds an orientation meeting for the 2017 Earth Week Cleanup on Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m ., in the Bronte Room at Oakville Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd. The 2017 Earth Week Cleanup sites takes place on Saturday, April 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. This year's event is special because it falls on Earth Day, which is celebrated around the world. "All local citizens and organizations are encouraged to participate in this community wide effort," said Stephen Dankowich, event co-ordinator and executive director of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR), in a press release. "The goals of the annual cleanup are to: promote awareness and respect for nature and waterways; beautify local neighbourhoods; build community through environmental activism; improve people's health; protect wildlife; and, increase awareness about the need to protect biodiversity in Oakville," said Dankowich. Oakville's annual Earth Week Cleanup began in 1992 and has been running for 25 consecutive years. Organizers say it is the largest annual cleanup during Earth Week in Canada. More than 78,000 students and citizens have participated since 1992. In 2016, OCCPEHR led the clean up of a record 47 locations in Oakville, according to the release. There were 1,500 volunteers who removed 4,600 kilograms of waste. During the orientation meeting, organizers will m ap out the 2017 cleanup locations. The event is sponsored by the Town, as well as local sponsors and a few participating schools. However, more sponsors and cleanup coordinators are needed.
