D uring the 1980s, teenag ers flocked to places like the Knights of Colum bus Hall and Te Dom e Banquet Hall on Fri day nights to dance to amateur D Js like Frank Fortino. Equipped with a heavy-duty sound system , between 300 and 350 teens from surround ing high schools (Queen Eliza beth, Oakville Trafalgar, White Oaks, St. Ignatius of Toyola and Gordon E. Perdue) would fill the dance halls to capacity, said Fortino. "It w as crazy." Fortino is planning a retro '80s dance party reunion on Friday, March 3 at the Knights of Colum bus Hall as a fund raiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Fortino says he toyed with the idea of holding a reunion five or six years ago. He reached out to friends on Facebook about three years ago. A long-time friend from high school, who always came out to the dances, responded. She w as totally supportive, says Fortino. Sadly, the friend passed away unexpectedly from liver cancer at the age of 45. Last December, Fortino's mother w as diagnosed with cancer. Hoping to raise $15,000 Fortino's goal for the fund raiser is to raise $15,000, with all proceeds going to the cancer society. Fortino's employer -- Cardinal Health Canada -- has also offered to match every dol lar raised up to $5,000. "I think this will take people back to their youth," said For tino, who also goes by the DJ nam e Frankie F Fresh. "I think it's going to be great." The event includes an open bar, all-you-can-eat buffet, m idnight sweets, a poutine truck and a snack table. Fortino will be giving out free retro '80s T-shirts and will play the best m usic from the `80s and '90s. He prom ises there will be no Drake, Taylor Swift or Rhianna. Each ticket holder will be eligible to win a 65-inch LED television as a door prize. Peo ple can dress up in costum es, but Fortino says it's optional. There will be a prize for the best '80s costum e, as well as draws for tickets to Maple Leaf gam es, the Raptors vs. Phila delphia 76ers (April 6), iPads and XBOX ONE gam e units. Tickets are $120 each. Journey to Justice, presented in cooperation with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton, includes a night of discussion and com m unity spirit during Black H istory Month. A dm ission is free and refreshments will be served. The film explores a group of Canadians who took racism to court. They are Canada's unsung heroes in the fight for Black civil rights. This docum entary pays tribute to six individuals -- including Viola D esm ond and Fred Christie -- who refused to accept inequality These brave pioneers helped secure justice for all Canadians.
