Perhaps Ward 5 knows that the traffic on Dundas will continue to flow free and clear, because the new traffic from North Oakville will all be rushing to pay tolls on Highway 407? And doesn't the whole northern border of Ward 5 abut North Oakville? One would think that just the geograph ic proximity would create some local curiosity about what's going to happen up there. But no, Councillor Behrens tells us it's not a major issue for her electorate. Last week, I attended all-candidates' meetings in South Iroquois Ridge and in Joshua's Creek. Quite understandably Councillor Behrens was not there, because she would have been canvassing in her own riding. However, I can assure Councillor Behrens that traffic and transportation needs, required to handle current and future growth in Oakville, were major issues at both meetings. We learned for example, that our GO parking lots are already at capacity, as is the rail system. We need more parking lots and more trains, just to alleviate the present situation. Once North Oakville comes into play, we'll probably need 8 storey parking lots at the GO stations. We heard nobody suggest that any alleviation is being planned for the foreseeable future. I can also assure Councillor Behrens that most candidates who spoke at those meetings also included the future development of North Oakville in their remarks. I have also been doing a fair amount of canvassing, though not in Ward 5. Again, the people to whom I have spoken have all been concerned about growth. They will often verbalize their concerns about growth in terms of its effects on them, rather that discussing growth `per se'. "We can't move on the roads in this town anymore", "the air quality sucks here", "I used to be able to walk my dog in the fields across the road - now I can only walk him around the block." What, indeed, `is' the North Oakville story, if it's not a story about growth? In actual fact, I'm beginning to believe that the growth of North Oakville will become a self-limiting prophecy. At the cur rent exponential rate of traffic growth, further development of North Oakville will soon come to a grinding half whether the Council likes it or not. The trucks carrying the building materi als, and the vehicles carrying the building workers, will simply become completely gridlocked and thus totally unable to reach the building sites. At that point; development is no longer eco nomic. In summary, I find this apparent divergent thinking in Ward 5 exceeding strange. A relevant quote from "My Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn reads: "I mean that people seldom look very hard for things they don't want to find. They avert their eyes from such things". As she works her Ward, perhaps Councillor Behrens needs to be looking harder and asking more openminded questions. Mike Lansdown.
