The memory of their late teammate Randy McKellar, who died in a car accident last December, helped inspire the Crusaders to their truly remarkable regular season and playoff run, which was capped off by the McCormick Cup championship. Although electing to face the wind (and rain) to start the match, it was the Crusaders that scored first on a Randy Warrington penalty kick. The Irish C anadians, however, scored an unconverted try to take a 5-3 lead into the break. And they stretched it to 8-3 shortly into the second half on a successful penalty kick, but it would be their final score, although not for lack of effort. With the wind at their back and their composure regained, the Cru, which defended tenaciously for the majority o f the first half, finally got their offence going. The Cru regained the lead, at 10-8 on a determined effort that resulted in a for an 18-6 margin at the break. Terry Wallace kicked both Cru penalties. The two teams started the second half with some fine rugby and traded unconverted try's for a 23-11 margin. From this point, it was all Crusaders although they could only translate the pressure into one try, converted by Wallace, for the final 23-18 verdict.
