THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 10, 2000 Crusaders at McCormick Cup (Continued from page 37) In two previous games in O ctober and September, the Cru thirds lost by 30 points or more. And for a while, it looked like another rout was in the making as Balmy Beach storm ed out to an 8-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. But the Cru stopped the bleeding with a Christian Evans penalty boot to narrow the gap to 8-3 by the half. And in the second half an early try resulted in an 8-8 dead lock which held up for most o f the half as both teams des perately defended their lines and launched numerous attacks from set pieces. In the end, however, it was the Beach that broke the 88 tie with a late try for the 13-8 verdict. U -1 6 The Cru U-16s had to settle for finalists in the Hong Kong Bank Cup cham pionship as they were edged in the cham pionship game by Aurora. The Cru w eren't helped by having three try's called back on controversial calls. The Cru, who continually improved as the season pro gressed, won their opening round robin game 29-7 over Burlington. U -1 4 Playing an exhibition match, the U-14's rounded off the season with a 41-0 win over an ORU com bination XV. The team played well together and the result showed the benefits of hard work and dedication and how well these guys have developed even though they only had a few fix tures during the season. MINI/U-12 The Crusaders entered two teams o f eight players who showed off their skills against the N om ads and Burlington. Both teams had excellent results beating the Nomads and loosing by a narrow margin to Burlington. The show piece o f the day was the last game when the players competed in a full field 16 on 16 game against a combined Nomads and Burlington team.
