4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 10, 2000 By Kim A m o tt SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER It isn't a foregone conclu sion that Oakville will disap pear when the provincial government turns a restruc turing eye to the Halton area, says Mayor Ann Mulvale. Instead, voters could see the regional level of govern ment eliminated, while the town and Greater Toronto Services Board (GTSB) take on more responsibilities. "We've yet to see the economies that were predict- M U N IC IP A L ELECTION ed for Toronto," said Mulvale. "I believe strongly that Halton and the munici palities in it have always been leaders in looking for economies anyway." "If there's a compelling econom ic argument, let's look at it, but let's take the time," she added. Mulvale, who has been acclaimed as mayor for the coming municipal term of office, was musing about amalgamation to an audi ence attending an all-candi dates meeting in Iroquois Ridge on Tuesday night. W hile amalgamation seemed to be of interest to some voters, development and traffic were the foremost issues on the minds of most. Roberta Need, running against incumbent Kurt Franklin for the position of Ward 6 regional and local councillor, warned area resi dents that the town could grow by about 100,000 peo ple over the next 10 years. "We're talking about a city the size of Toronto all over again in Oakville north of Hwy. 5," she said. She argued that Franklin and other members of town council have not put the nec essary safeguards to protect environm entally-sensitive areas and heritage agricul tural lands into the develop ment plans. SUPERSTORE "I think what you really want to do is to vote for someone who is prepared to bring this back to council," said Need. Her comments drew the wrath o f M ulvale, who jum ped into the fray to defend the method by which council recently approved a plan for developm ent in lands north of Dundas Street (formerly Hwy. 5). Residents vocally expressed their displeasure when Need was cut off from speaking following the mayor's interjections. After the meeting, Need also suggested the mayor's interference in the discus sion was "not fair play." "She has a way o f jum p ing in and giving a whole bunch of information with out answering the question," said Need angrily. Need says Oakville's growing population, along with the need for appropriate infrastructure to support it, is the hottest topic she has encountered in the ward. "All anyone wants to talk about is development," she said, describing the majority of voters she has spoken to as opposed to rapid develop ment. Local residents also expressed concern about the safety of building on the pipeline lands in Iroquois Ridge, which are slated for townhouse developments, and the impact growth will have on the area's traffic woes.
