Friday November 10, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 7 Meeting should not have been cancelled On Thurs. Nov. 2nd, my wife and I made our way to the meet-the-candidates meeting scheduled to be held at River Oaks elementary school com mencing at 7:30 p.m. On arrival, we were greeted by a number of notices attached to the entrance of the school stat ing the meeting was cancelled because of an anonymous notice sent to the candidates. I was not a happy camper to say the least. The only opportunity to meet the candidates in this ward was cancelled because of some diatribe writ ten by an individual who didn't have the courage to sign their name. In my opinion, the whole thrust of this `letter' was to malign a local citizens' group (Oakvillegreen) and have the meeting cancelled. It seems the anonymous author was successful on both counts. That's not a good signal to be send ing to members of the community who want to cause trouble and take no responsibility for their actions. When I returned home that evening, I contact ed (councillor and candidate) Liz Behrens and was informed that the Regional Deputy Police Chief had suggested that they not attend. My wife spoke to candidate Jeff Knoll and was told that the police contacted him and told him that it would be pru dent if he did not attend; however, the public were £ Michaels B r in g th is co u p o n to SPECIAL COUPON Letters to the Editor allowed to show-up and the police took the matter so seriously that they didn't think it necessary to offer us any protection. It seems to me that candidates vying for lead ership roles in the community would not be intim idated by an anonymous letter attaching a local citizens' group. In fact, I would ask, why has Oakvillegreen become the central issue in this election? What evil are they guilty of? Can any of the candidates offer me an answer? This municipality has some very serious prob lems and I think it's a healthy situation that some citizens are stating their opinions, taking positions and even trying to suggest solutions. All the incumbent politicians have had experience with this organization and, in my opinion, they have never given any reason to believe that they would conduct themselves in the manner suggested in the anonymous letter. If the democratic process hands on such a thin thread, we are in a lot of trouble. I sincerely hope these `leadership' candidates are not faced with a real crisis during their term.
