Oakville Beaver File Photos Oakville NFLers kicking up a storm It has been quite a w eek for O akville's two NFLers, both placekickers -- M ike Vanderjagt for the Indianapolis Colts and Steve Christie for the Buffalo Bills. Vanderjagt, a W hite O aks grad, becam e the highest paid placekicker in the NFL, with a new five-year contract extension that will pay him a reported $7.75-m illion over five years. And C hristie, an O akville Trafalgar grad, scooped up AFC player o f the week honours (for special team s) for his key contributions in the B ills' 16-13 win over New England last Sunday. Vanderjagt, in his third year in the league, w as p rev io u sly p o ck etin g the league m inim um , $358,000. He originally signed up with the-then cellar dw elling C olts in `98 after a couple o f Grey Cup winning seasons with the Argos in `96 and `97. Since then, it's been smooth sailing -- right through the uprights. Despite an uncharacteristic slow start last season, in which he hit only two of his first five field goals, Vanderjagt's overall total now stands at 75 o f 84, an 89 per cent efficiency rate which is a club record. The NFL record, with a minimum 100 field-goal attempts, is 82 per cent held by Jacksonville's Mike Hollis. D espite last seaso n 's slow start, Vanderjagt went on to lead the NFL in scoring with 145 points. And he's still on the same roll, having made 46 o f his last 48 attempts. T hat includes this season's totals -- which currently stand at 14 out of 15. He is currently tied for fourth in the AFC in scoring (and seventh in the NFL) with 68 points. He has never missed a point after in his NFL career with the streak currently at 92. Vanderjagt has also picked up AFC player of the week honours (for special teams) once this year, for a game-winning 45-yard field goal with no tim e left on October 1st that gave the C olts' an 18-16 win at Buffalo. It was the fourth gam e winning kick of his career. Christie, in his 11th year, m eanwhile, pulled off a dynamic double last Sunday. His 48-yard field goal with four seconds left sent the game into overtim e at 13-13 and then his 32-yard field goal in over time won the game. It was the second time this year he has pulled off such a `double', tying the game on a late field goal and then winning it with a field goal in overtime. And it m arked his seventh special teams player o f the week honour, includ ing three times this year, the other two being in wins over Tennessee on opening week and over San D iego on Oct. 15. Four o f the the B ills' five victories this season have com e off the foot o f C hristie, who is the B ills' all-tim e leading scorer. Over his career, C hristie has notched 13 gam e-w inners in the final m inute of regulation or overtim e, and his seven overtim e field goals ranks him second in NFL history only to Jim Breech. A nother Bills player, linebacker Sam Cowart also picked up defensive player of the week honours, m aking it the first time in Bills history they had two players so honoured in the same week. If you want to catch them in action this Sunday, the Bills host the C hicago Bears at 1 p.m. while the Colts host the New York Jets in the Sunday night gam e (8:35 p.m.). Check t.v. listings.
