The international meet attracted com petitors from the U.S., Alaska, Puerto Rico, Europe, United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Canada. See story for photo I.D. Sheridan to open sports hall of fame Sheridan College will open its sports hall of fame next Friday (Nov. 17). The special `invitation only' reception will take place at 6:30 p.m., prior to the Sheridan Bruins m en's basketball team 's season and home opener against the Centennial Colts. The inductees will also be honoured at half-time of the game. "We could not be prouder o f the athletes, coaches and builders that will be forever enshrined at our new Hall of Fame," remarked Jim Flack, the longtime coach of the men's basketball team who, this year, has also assumed the position o f m anager o f the athletic and recreation depart ment. The new hall of fame and alumni lounge is located at the Porter Athletic Centre at the Trafalgar campus in Oakville. `T h is is ju st the beginning of our five year plan to increase and enhance student life at Sheridan by creating a culture that celebrates our proud athletic tradition," said Flack. "After an initial induction of eight individuals who have contributed greatly to the pride and identity of Sheridan, we will be moving to a tradition o f adding one to four names per year during our Homecoming weekend." Those being inducted are ... · Paul Reader, the m en's volleyball coach from 197794. During this time, the Bruins volleyball team complete ly dominated Ontario, winning 11 OCAA gold medals and the national cham pionship in 1983; · Mike Albert, a m en's volleyball player and graduate of the business administration program in 1992. Mike was the setter and team captain from 1988 to 1992, was allCanadian in 1990 and 1992, and was Sheridan Athlete of the Year in 1990 and 1991; · Bill Currie, a standout defenceman who played hock ey for the Bruins between 1967 and 1970. Bill was twice selected Athlete o f the Year and led the Bruins to the 1969 Ontario finals. Bill was also one of the first graduates of Sheridan College; · Doug Peters, the men's hockey coach from 1973 to 1978. Doug guided the Bruins to their first provincial hock ey championship in the 1973/74 season; · Amy Ramsay, former wom en's hockey star from 1977 to 1979. Amy led the Bruins to a provincial silver medal in 1979 and was named Athlete of the Year for her exploits; · Ray M cCaffee, an employee of Sheridan College who was one o f the visionaries that helped to create an Athletic Department in order to help foster the identity of the insti tution. Ray will be posthum ously recognized in the `builders' category; · Bernie Custis, coach of the Bruins football program from 1972 to 1980. After a stellar career at Syracuse and with the Hamilton Tiger Cats, Bernie coached Sheridan to six straight eastern championships from 1973 to 1978; · Sue Alexander-W helan, standout volleyball player from 1980 to 1982. Sue was Athlete o f the Year in 1982, and was the only female Sheridan athlete named to the all millennium team.
