Description

Interior of blacksmith shop, looking from nr. side of stocks between the 2 arms. The 2 arms of the horse stocks are mounted parallel to each other spaced approx. 2'4" apart. The horse to be shoed was walked between the 2 arms and tied. The bridle was secured to the wall mounted hook, if the horse was packing the exterior. The mechanism which supported the hoof was adjustable in height for horses of different heights and was angled forward or back depending on which hoof was being done. The stocks were an uncommon feature of the blacksmith trade. No other examples of the Barcus safety horse stocks have been located to date in eastern or western Canada or even in the vicinity of Wabash, Indiana, U.S.A. where they were manufactured. This makes the stocks even more valuable as an artifact.
