Including our 12 standing committees, their numerous sub-committees and our Board o f Directors, some 200 people have volunteered this year. It is through these volunteers, supported by our hard working Chamber staff, that virtually all Cham ber events are conceived, planned, presented and hosted. A sub-committee o f our M arketing and M embership Services Committees is currently at work organizing this special event that will be held at Quality Hotel & Suites on June 27th. If you are a Chamber volunteer, thank you very much and congratulations on your contribution, and I will look forward to seeing you at this event! In previous newsletters, I have mentioned the Cham ber's involvement this year in pushing for action on finding real solutions to our transportation bottlenecks. On April 27th, Vice President Laurie Morrison and I made a presentation to the Greater Toronto Services Board giving the Cham ber's comments on the G TSB 's draft strategic transportation plan for the GTA and Hamilton. Our presentation recognized the work that had gone into this plan but stressed the need for the final plan to be much more specific in identifying the responsibility o f each level of government for solving their part of the problem. Such solutions should include arranging suitable private sector participation and providing adequate government funding. On the subject of our transportation initiative, the week o f June 4-9 was Transportation Awareness Week. During this period, your Chamber, and our neighbors hosted various events. While driving on almost any o f our roads gives you an im m ediate aw areness o f the problem , these events will be aim ed at raising awareness o f how everyone can help with solutions! On May 1st, our Chamber was co-host o f a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Express in which the Right Honorable Joe Clark was the speaker. We were honored to have Mr. Clark with us in Oakville for the first o f what we hope will be a series of appearances by our Federal political party leaders in response to the invitations we issued earlier this year. Som e interesting touii Many of you may not be aware of the amoui Chamber spends each year in the area o f Tourist staff, but the hundreds of hours donated by i Committee. It begs to ask the question from tin Recently Research Resolutions & Consulting of information based on the Oakville statistics fi would share with you some of their key finding * the greater Oakville area atrracted over 90(1 * trip spending in Oakville reached $54.4 mil * approximately two-thirds o f all visits to ( excursions (588,000), prim arily made Overnight visits amounted to (317,000) * trip spending in the Oakville region is i overnight travellers ($45.3 million) than it h than 24 hours ($9.1 million) The above statistics would seem to indicatevaluable contributor to the overall economy of Your Chamber, in partnership with the To' funds our Visitor Information Centre, with coming to us each year from HRDC coveri summer students. Now for the big question - Is Tourism worth] being offered to that sector both in terms of fin and effort from your Chamber? We would welcome your input on this questii Proudly supporting the Oakville Chamber of Commerce for over 1 7 years.
