Ms. Mertz noticed she was the first working woman to serve on the Board, and recognizing the world was changing, she encouraged her Chamber to bring into focus many more outstanding professional and business women in the region, incorporating them into leadership positions within the Chamber. Through "this voice of business", they too would participate in guiding the present and shap ing the future. Since then, Chambers from around the United States have participated in the Athena Program. "It is our goal to create awareness of the Athena Award in Canada." Windsor was the first city in Canada to join, with Oakville joining four years ago. Currently, four other cities have come on board the Athena Award Program, with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce launching their program next May. Sault Ste. Marie, Richmond Hill and Burlington will all be launching in the near future. "There is an ongoing network of Athena recipients, all of whom have a vision of a better world," says Saulez. "The Town of Oakville has a new Athena leader in waiting, who will be present ed with a challenge to have the courage to dream beyond the confines of today, transforming the Athena vision of a better quality of life into reality." And to date, all of Oakville's three recipients have risen to that challenge successfully. It's your job to nominate another special person for this award, to recognize someone's leadership qualities. The Athena Awards `cele brate the potential of all women as valued members and leaders of the community, recognizing those who support them, and honouring those who strive towards the highest levels of professional accom plishment."
