The award came after the choir earned a silver at the Musicfest Canada national competitions. B o u C u tir OAKVILLE Photo by Barrie Erskine Story by Carol Baldwin Well-rounded chorister wins leadership award Wilbur Wong joined the choir to find out whether or not he could sing. And he can. Now, the bass singer has won an Honour Award for being part of the concert choir at Iroquois Ridge High School, not because his voice sets him apart from the rest of the choristers, but because his helpful attitude and lead ership qualities are outstanding. "I'm the bass/tenor section leader - the `guy section' leader, right now," he explains. "I even learned to play the piano by m yself so I could play the scales for my sec tion... And I try to help (individual singers) with intona tion, so we match each other as far as notes go, and I make sure the bass and tenor sections know their parts." The choir's music director, Katie Kirkup-Ortolan, selected Wong for the award after M usicfest Canada's recent national competitions in which the IRHS Concert Choir earned a silver medal. "Everybody gets an award - gold, silver or bronze. It's according to your ability. W hatever the adjudicators think you deserve," Wong says o f the choir's award, adding that it first had to do well at the regional competitions to be invited to the nationals. Wong, who at one time played the bass clarinet in the IRHS band, now concentrates on his choral skills and on learning to play the violin. "I decided that I wanted to pursue a stringed instru ment, and decided to go for the violin," says the Grade 11 student, explaining that orchestral music also interested him more than band tunes. "It's a challenging instrument, and I wanted to see if I was up to the challenge.. .1 may not be the best player, but I'm having a lot of fun." However, despite the fun and the challenge the violin presents, Wong still admits that he continues to have a preference for singing. "I'm a lot better at it," he explains. "And singing is a lot easier than playing an instrum ent...A s a group you don't feel as nervous. When you're doing a solo, you feel the pressure." Regardless o f his obvious interest in music, Wong maintains that business will be his program of choice when he enters university. In fact, the young man current ly tutors students who are having difficulty with math. However, he doesn't plan on letting his left brain take over completely once he graduates from high school. He says he will continue to pursue music as a hobby. W ith its easy-to-use Internet browser, COGECO@Home is yo u r best frie n d on th e web.
