Wednesday, June 14, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Lake Ontario 300 Challenge sets off from Oakville Thursday The L ake O n tario 300 Challenge is the longest sailboat race on Lake Ontario and it starts, ju st o ff the Oakville harbour pier, at 11 a.m. on Thursday (June 15). This will be the 11th running of the race which is jointly organized by O akville Yacht Squadron and Port Credit Yacht Club. For the year 2000, it is Oakville Yacht Squadron's turn to run the race. The race was originally for sailing yachts with double-handed crews only, and it has been recendy expanded to include fully crewed yachts. Double-handed yachts have the choice o f racing in the flying sails divi sion (using spinnakers) or racing in the white sail division (using only main sails and jibs). All fully-crewed yachts may fly spinnakers. The fully crewed yachts start at 11 a.m. (warning gun at 10:50 a.m. and preparatory gun at 10:55 a.m.) and the double handed yachts start at 12 noon (with similar warning and preparatory signals). Each fleet sails the same course. The course from the start line is northeast to Port Credit to round an inflatable mark off Port Credit Yacht Club, then across the lake to round the marker buoy off the Niagara River. From there in a north easterly direction towards Kingston to round Main Duck Island; back to the Niagara River mark er buoy and on to the finish at the Oakville harbour. The overall length of the "rhumb line" course is about 305 nautical miles. The race is, of course, non-stop and the finishers are expected, depending on the wind, weather and size of yacht, to cross the finish line sometime from Saturday morning to Sunday evening. All yachts carry a handicap rating and elapsed times are converted to cor rected times using the handicap sys tem, and the yacht in each class with shortest corrected time is the winner of its class. Safety is a big consideration in a race of this type. Each yacht must com ply with an eight page list of safety requirements and each yacht is inspect ed for compliance before the race. During the race, each yacht must radio in to Prescott Coast Guard every six hours giving its current latitude and longitude. Every six hours, this information is relayed to race headquarters at Oakville Yacht Squadron and the positions of the leading three boats in each division will be posted on the website (www.lakeontario300.org) for the information of those following the race progress. One good reason for choosing this date for the race is that full moon occurs on Friday, June 16th, and this makes night racing on Lake Ontario much more pleasant (providing there are not too many clouds!). The race date is timed to coincide with Friday' s full moon!
