Unfounded, a Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) term that allows police to close an oc currence, doesn't necessarily imply the service doesn't believe a victim or person reporting. All reported incidents are fully-investigated. A total of 57 unfounded sexual assault cas es in 2016 were examined by Halton police, and determined to have been properly and thoroughly-investigated. Of the incidents examined, 15, or 8.3 per cent, did not occur or could not have oc curred as reported. In the remaining 42 cases, representing 74 per cent of all unfounded sexual assault oc currences, it w as determined through com plete investigations that a criminal offence had not been committed. In a discussion on the board's role in the review, Tanner said the sexual assault training for its officers is excellent, noting its job, in general, is to ensure victims of any crime are well-serviced as m uch as possible.
