These dancers com e from Oakville, M ississauga, Burlington and Milton. They will be com peting with m ore than 4,500 dancers from the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Russia, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Japan and other dancers from across Canada. Since the dawn of the m usical Riverdance in the m id-`90s, Irish dancing has been popular around the world. But the history of Irish dancing began m any years earlier. The Irish Dance Com m ission w as es tablished in Ireland in the 1890s, under the um brella of the Gaelic Teague whose goal w as to prom ote Irish language and culture. In the 1930s, formal lists of Irish dance teachers, ju d ges and com petitors were registered and this practice continued an nually through the years. Until the 1960s, the com m unity was alm ost exclusively for dancers in Ireland and Great Britain. W hen the first World Irish Dance Cham pionships happened in 1970, the group gained global status. Until 2000, the prestigious World Irish Dance Cham pionships w as never held outside the 26 counties of Ireland. Since then, it has been held in Belfast, Glasgow, Tondon, Philadelphia, Boston and Mon treal. To raise m oney for the dancers, the Claddagh Ball will be held on Saturday, March 25 at the Te Dom e Banquet Hall.
