She is currently working on a Masters of Education at St. Francis Xavier University and has taught in the Transition Year program at Dalhousie University. When asked about her message of the power of love, kindness and acceptance, Palmeter says everywhere we turn, women are being told they are not enough -- thin enough, smart enough or pretty enough. "We are more than enough," she said. Palmater will, as is typical, begin her keynote in Halton with a brief introduction about herself, so people can get to know her. She calls herself a "redemption baby" born after her parents already had six kids. It was also after her dad, who was an alcoholic, had gone sober. "That's when I came along," she says, adding that since her siblings were grown up, it was like having a family of parents instead of two. Palmater was raised in northern New Brunswick, where her father, who died a few years ago at age 87, had opened a HarleyDavidson dealership. When Palmater' s mother died about a year ago, Palmater was struck by the realization that her parents were gone. Her siblings quickly rallied around offering love and support, she said, and in return, Palmater says she lives her life trying to earn all the love she' s been given. Palmater originally pursued a career in law with the goal of giving voice to those who don't have one. But being a lawyer "fit like a bad suit," and she left the profession to become an entertainer. Palmater remembers calling her parents to tell them she was leaving law to become a comedian, and that she broke up with her boyfriend because she was gay. In response, her parents were loving and supportive, she said. When Palmater talks to youths, she said she tells them to expect two things in life: you will die; and, you will fail spectacularly at some point in your life. When you fail, that's when you know what you're made of, she said. "Failure is part of life," she said. "You don't learn when there is a win." Women of Halton Action Movement and the Zonta Club of Oakville are hosting The Dinner Party 2017, at the Burlington Convention Centre. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. In addition to Palmater's address, there will be a silent auction and a formal dinner. Tickets cost $60. For more information, visit www. thedinnerpartyiwd.ca. This year, all proceeds will be donated to three organizations; Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan; Halton Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services Halton; and, Zonta International.
