www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 9, 2017 | 10 www.edwardjones.com Churches set good example continued from p.9 December, while all of Rami' s family -- parents and four siblings -- were with him when he arrived last week. Peter Goodspeed, a St. Andrew church parish member, helped facilitate the sponsorship process, an idea which began in September 2014. Rev. Cornelius (C o n ) O 'Mahony approached the parish to request sponsoring a Syrian refugee family. "The parish got together and we decided to sponsor a family. I had met this family (Yousuf' s ) in Lebanon at one point. I checked to see if they were still there and needed sponsorship and they were," said Goodspeed, noting it took a little more than a year to bring Yousuf' s family to Oakville. He noted the entire St. Andrew congregation contributed funds to purchase furniture and rent an apartment to prepare for their arrival. Not long after the parish began preparing for Yousuf' s family a group of Oakville residents within and outside the St. Andrew community approached the church to sponsor a second family who had relatives locally. After Goodspeed told them about Yousuf, the six Oakville families decided to sponsor Rami and his clan, he said. "Finding the perfect sponsorships across C anada... churches are right in the forefront of it all. All the churches are setting a really good example and have been very much involved with the Syrian refugee crisis," said Goodspeed. He said soccer is a sport Rami and Yousuf, and Syrians in general, really enjoy-- a passion the cousins have shared their entire lives. "They played everyday when they were in Lebanon and the refugee camps. The chief recreation they had was the chance to play a little bit of soccer," said Goodspeed. For now, the cousins will enjoy playing soccer non-competitively, as specific details on the team(s) they will join and when they will start are still being determined. "I will do my best to get to the highest level that I can," said Rami. D o e s y o u r f in a n c ia l a d v is o r k n o w y o u r lif e g o a ls ?
