Innovative and sensual Moist is sure to please crowds with favourites like Silver, Shotgun and Push when it kicks-off the Oakville Waterfront Festival this year at 8 p.m., Friday, June 23rd, on the Coronation Waterfront Stage. Combining innovative guitar play ing with the sensual sound of cello. Moist delivers a distinctive rock sound all its own. This Montreal-based five-piece band's third full-length recording Mercedes Five and Dime is less about the aggression or sullen beauty of its former two releases, 1994's Silver (certified four times platinum in Cana da) and 1996's Creature (almost four times platinum in Canada). "I think Mercedes Five and Dime is more of a collective and organic album," says singer David Usher. "With every record, we're looking tf> do different things, and we're at a dif ferent place now. Moist is very much a group of writers, and we're always looking for a new outlook, a new way to present the material as a collective * ' "It's even playful in places," adds Kevin Young, keyboards. "We wanted some songs that allowed us to stretch out musically...There are some ele ments that we can jam on, and we look forward to taking things a little further live than we have in the past." ·ALL DRAPERY FABRICS ·ALL DECORATIVE HARDWARE & ® BLINDS See details hi store More Waterfront acts O A K V IL L E Set against the backdrop of Lake Ontario on the stage at Lakeside Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24th and again on Sunday June 25th, the Oakville Symphony Orchestra (OSO) will present a varied program at this year's Oakville Waterfront Festival. Jedrzejek invites interested musicians to give him a call at (416) 231-4424 for an appointment to audition. "Auditions are always welcome. Sometimes members have to leave for a variety of reasons - illness, moving, swamped with work, which is rare. Substituting is a nice stepping stone to being in the band, because once they know some of the material, it's easier to get in,"says the founder, noting that his orchestra is based in Etobicoke. "We have had members from as far away as Hamilton. We have, at this moment, a few band members from Oakville...It is an all-city orchestra, mostly from the Greater Toronto Area." As well as enjoying the opportunity to play in an orches tra, the young musicians meet others with similar interests, says Jedrzejek, and their music often takes them on out-ofthe-country excursions. "Last January we were in Tampa, Florida for the week end," he says. "We did a couple of shows a day at the Snowbird Extravaganza South.. .Those are the dividends of coming to rehearsals." For those who miss The Toronto All Star Big Band's Waterfront performance, the group will be entertaining in town on Sunday, Oct. 1st at 2 p.m. in the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts.
