"Contributing to this overall success was the dedicated work of 25 town rep and 151 house league coaches. "On the rep side, 11 of our teams went to the OMHA's, five won their league title, and our house league teams won so many tournaments that it was hard to keep up with them. "Along with the overall embracing of the Mitron system by our teams, Oakville is the envy of all of our competi tors." Wayne Moorehead was acclaimed as the new vice-pres ident of house league, succeeding Mark Bentley, who con tributed so much over the years to the success of the MOHA. With town rep vice-president Mike Dvemechuk electing not to complete his two-year term, the incoming board of directors will appoint a committee to administer that posi tion until the fall. Dvemechuk left his position in excellent shape. Cru m gby teams continue strong play The Crusader women's team fought to a 5-5 draw in Ontario women's rugby league action on Saturday. Lisa Pool punched through the Crusaders' try. A wet and sloppy day resulted in strong tackling defence by both evenly matched teams. In three matches played to date, the Cm, newly promot ed to Ontario's top women's league, sports a record of one win, one loss and one tie. MEN'S 1ST XV Last Friday, the Cm 1st XV hosted a visiting English team, the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) at Cmsader Park and triumphed 48-3. The Cm boasted seven tries, five conversions and one penalty while the visitors settled for one penalty. Although the score appears lopsided, the REME team had some talented players who play on a regular basis in various British leagues. As this was a friendly, the Cm made use of substitutions from its second and third teams. These players adapted well and showed that they can com pete in the major league. Dom Millar played a very aggressive game in both the loose and tight phases. With two tries, he was elected as the `man of the match' for the Cm. Contact the Hockey Office 338-9220 English Riding School In defence of th e ir title The two-time defending Oakville Angels U-15 girls soccer team have kicked off their 2000 season by capturing the West Niagara Invitational Tournament for the 2nd consecutive year. On Saturday, May 13th, the Angels opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Saltfleet. Scoring for the Angels were Jenna Sporta, Lauren Glover, Kara Anderson and Megann Vander VlieL In their second game, the Angels faced the Rochester Ravens and beat them 3-0. Kara Lang opened the scoring early in the 1st half, notched a sec ond goal in the 2nd half and Stefanie DeBoer out-raced two defenders before deking the Rochester goalie to pot one into a gaping net to round out the scoring. In semifinal action, the Angels found themselves up against Sudbury, their semi-final opponent in the provincial championship of the last two years. The Angels prevailed 2-0 on an early goal by Kara Lang and a 2nd half goal by Stephanie DeBoer, after receiving a cross from Marisa Videc. Kristine Snedden recorded the shutouts. The championship game was an all-Oakville affair that saw the .Angels up against the Oakville Rebels. The Angels came out flying building up a quick 4-0 lead en route to a 4-1 victory and the tournament championship. Scoring for the Angels were Lauren Glover, Anne Friedland, Kara Lang and Kara Anderson. In league play, the Angels kicked off their 2000 campaign on May 11th with a 3-0 victory over Burlington as the Angels found the back of the net three times in the 2nd half after Burlington effectively clogged up the front of their net in the first half. The 2nd half was a total domination by the Angels as they wore Burlington down with relentless pressure. Marisa Videc, with 2 goals, sandwiched around a goal by Carly Anderson provided the goals with Kara Lang (2) and Jenna Sporta picking up the assists. Kristine Snedden recorded the shut-out. The Expos scored three times in the 5th and once in the 6th to overcome a two-run deficit and claim an 8 - 5 victory over the Blue Jays. Andrew Durrer led the Expos at the plate with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI while picking up the save with a perfect seventh inning. Winning pitcher Andrew Lee, added two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Starting pitcher Jas Brar contributed a single and RBI. The three combined to allow just two hits while striking out nine. The winning run was driven in by Rob Liska who also scored twice and made a tremendous over the shoulder catch for the first out of the seventh inning.
