Wednesday, June 21, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Silver medal in Peterborough The O akville Explosion girls U-14 rep team edged Erin Mills 3-2 in drizzly conditions at Shell Park on June 6. Oakville quickly fell behind 1-0 but just as quickly tied it up with Jennifer Pitkin capitalizing o ff a Brook Johnson comer and Tania Dias then put Oakville up 2-1 redirecting a searching cross from Jessica Pudwell. Erin M ills evened it a 2-2 but within five minutes, after some sustained pressure, Jessica Turner fired in the winner on a low drive. Katie Price Owen secured the win by cooly clearing a ball o f the goal line. Jessica Povalaitis and Kathryn Matheson also had very strong games. PETE R BO R O U G H TO U R N EY Oakville settled for a well earned silver medal at a Peterborough tour ney over the June 3/4th weekend, advancing to the final with O.T. shootout wins in both the semifinals and quarterfinals. They couldn't push the championship game to a shootout, however, falling 2-0 to Ottawa Sonics in a display o f marvelous soccer. Down 2-0, Oakville scrapped back to largely dominate the last 15 minutes but just couldn't get on the board. Oakville did claw back in the semifinal against Whitby, equalizing the game at 1-1 (on a goal by Lauren Pulford) to eventually send it into over time and then onto overtime penalty boots where Oakville held the edge 32. Successful shots were by Jessica Sacripante, Pudwell and Hyland. The quarterfinal featured a scoreless draw throughout regulation and overtime with Oakville winning 3-2 on penalty kicks with Hyland, Tania Dias and Matheson potting goals. Oakville sent both goaltenders to the line o f fire and Katarina Vulic had two saves and Jennifer Pitken one -- that was true for both the quarterfinal and semifinal. In the preliminary round Explosion met Barrie on a bog like field and fell 2-1 (Jennifer Pitken scored for Explosion). In the second preliminary match Explosion leveled host Peterborough 20 on a lovely goal by Heather Lockhart, a result o f a three way passing play from Pudwell and Pitken. Jennifer Pitken potted the second goal. M osquitos still pack p o ten t sting Playing in their first tournament o f the season, the O akville A's major m osquito baseball team picked up from where they left o ff last year as they captured the championship at the London Tournament. The A's built up an 11-0 lead in the first three innings and then coasted to a 19-7 win in the championship game against London. The onslaught started with Mike Ide's monster double that cleared the bases to bring in three runs at the top o f the first inning. Neil Ravelle was the offensive player o f the game notching a triple, two doubles and a walk as he cashed in five runs and scored three times himself. Mike Trbovich played a solid game in the outfield when he snagged a blast to deep centre field to end the second inning. The semifinal match up against Clarkson saw Paul Jurgaitis pitch a com plete game surrendering only one hit and one run as the A's frustrated the Indians 9-1. Oakville went undefeated in the preliminary round. Here's a recap ... - Oakville 10, Barrie 1: Oakville reeled off three runs in as many innings led by Jordan Windisch who registered two singles and a deep blast to left field. Graeme Moffatt frustrated the Barrie batters striking out 7 o f the 10 batters he faced. New comer Andrew Barlow played a strong game both offensively and defensively. Oakville 5, Clarkson 4: Tyler Windisch was the hero of the game as he stroked a single to score the tying and winning runs o f the game. Oakville 8, Markham: Oakville scored five runs in the third inning (Mike Young doubted to score two runs) and three runs in the fifth inning (Daniel Hunt unloaded a blast to bring in the three runs). Defensively, sec ond baseman Ted Starr knocked down a line drive, juggled the ball and made a spectacular catch to register a key out. Karson Johnson shut down any last minute rally by Markham as he made short work of their batters in the final two innings. Team is rich in p itching talent It's all-star time for Little League baseball, with the m inor-AA (11 years) team poised for tournament play, with coach/manager Dave Downer directing operations. Heading the list is a string o f pitchers, with their field positions shown in brackets: Alden Black (shortstop), Adam Davidson (third base), Matt Downer (second base), Ryan Malhotra (catcher, third base), Ryan Mallough (outfield, second base), Adam O'Brodovich (first base), Chris Stewart (outfield). A s coach Downer puts it, "We can never have too many pitchers, par ticularly when they are restricted to the number o f innings they can pitch in tournament play." Making up the balance o f the team o f 14 players are Patch Channing (second base), Daniel Keresteci (first base), Roger Lambert (catcher, out field), Alex Camell (outfield), and Setjio Lujens (outfield). Assisting Downer are coaches Roba Davidson and Rob Proctor. A N C A ST E R TO U R N EY The team saw its first action at the annual Ancaster Majors Little League tournament, with the main highlight for the Oakville Minors (11 years) being the pitching performance o f Alden Black. As coach Downer put it, `That was a phenomenal performance by Alden against a bigger, stronger Ancaster Major (12 years) team. "Striking out 11 Ancaster players in six innings was just a masterful job." Black held them to four hits in keeping them o ff the board, but a win was not to be as the Ancaster team came up with two unanswered runs in the top o f the seventh. Adam Davidson, Roger Lambert and Ryan Malhotra each registered a hit in the 2-0 loss. In earlier action against the Erindale Minors, Oakville was cruising with a 12-3 lead into the bottom o f the sixth, with runs scored by Davidson, Malhotra with two each, and Lambert, A.J. O'Brodovich, Sergio Lukens, Scott DeGroot, Marko Dinordic, Alex Camell and Black with one run. O'Brodovich and Ryan Mallough had two RBI's, with hits by Lujens (2), Matt Downer, Mallough, Stewart, and Patch Channing. And then the roof almost fell in with Erindale pecking away at the Oakville lead with eight scary runs to make the score 12-11. With two out, relief pitcher Davidson picked up a ground ball and threw to first baseman Daniel Keresteci for the final out. Whew! The finals were washed out by rain. The consolation finals had the O akville minors against the Ancaster minors w hile the cham pionship final had the O akville majors against the Ancaster Majors.
