Ready or not, it is here and, as always, your Chamber is ready to provide a wide range of services to help your business be successful. Even though I fear that 1 may be the 2Kth person to do so, 1 would like to extend sincere best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year. In early January, the Chamber will hold our fourth major event since September focused on the transportation congestion crisis. Our elected officials at the Federal, Provincial and Municipal levels have been invited to this meeting and at press time commitments have been received from many of the invitees. We will use this forum to present our views on this issue, to learn more about what is planned to address this problem and to discuss the applicability of fund ing initiatives that have proven to be successful elsewhere. Meanwhile, thanks to the efforts of our Business and Government Affairs Committee, 17 representatives from chambers and boards of trade from North York to Hamilton have met twice to discuss transportation congestion. As a result, the first annual Transportation Awareness Week is being planned Look for further details on this important initiative in the near future! In December the Chamber pledged its support to help communicate to business a new pro gram offered by the Parks and Recreation Department of the Town of Oakville. This program, the Recreation Connection Fund gives businesses the opportunity to give back to their com munity to help those who cannot participate in Parks & Recreation programs due to financial constraints. I am pleased to report that in 2000 we will be networking, networking, networking. Members have already committed to sponsoring the ever-popular monthly Business After Hours events through June. Plans are also in place for a Business Before Business in February and for social/networking events with neighbouring chambers. Remember to bring business cards, brochures and other marketing materials to all these events. 1 would like to thank all members and other businesses who advertised in this directory and to congratulate Chamber staff for their hard work on this very large project. Until next month, Note: Bob can be contacted through the Chamber office or by E-mail at bob.griesbach@ agra.com at AGRA. During this time over 500 people have gone through their SEA (Self Employment Assistance) Program. The success rate of graduates is phenomenal. Against all odds, and contrary to Government statistics, over 82% of graduates are still operating their own businesses. The Oakville Chamber of Commerce has provided tremendous support to this organization over the years by supplying volunteers to review individual participants' Business Plans and provide guidance, as well as to assist with joint events. Their participation goes one step further in that the recently appointed Executive Director of the Centre, Laurie Morrison, is also a Vice President with the Oakville Chamber. Another Oakville Chamber VP, Brian Barrington, has recently joined the Board of Directors. Since coming on board in September, Laurie has been kept very busy, forming five new active committees (Information Technology, Member Services, Operations, Curriculum, and Marketing). Committee membership is open to anyone interested in getting involved with entrepreneurship. The Member Services Committee is launching, this month, a campaign focusing on membership which will include networking opportunities and access to Website links, all in keeping to the mandate set by The Enterprise Centre in offering long-term support to their clients. Their newly launched website at www.enterprisecentre.com is a great resource to the members and The Centre is now listed as an e-group member at ecentre@egroups.com where weekly seminars will take place in the chat forum area to discuss issues such as marketing, finance, sales, etc. Schedule of forums will be available at the end of January. The Centre also offers programs for youth, and a C.O.A.R.E. Program for the Mentally and Physically Challenged. The first group of C.O.A.R.E. graduates has successfully launched their own E-Commerce business. The Halton Peel Enterprise Centre, as it is more formally called, is a community based not-for-profit organization that encourages entrepreneurial values and provides support programs and services to assist new business ventures in partnership with other community organizations. It is the product of an extremely successful joint venture, involving Human Resources Canada, Sheridan College, the regional communities of Halton and Peel, and private businesses. For those wishing to leant more about the Enterprise Centre and their ongoing series of programs, please contact them at (905) 825-2345, or drop by their offices in the Hopedale Mall, Unit 34,1515 Rebecca Street, Oakville.
