The two are 4th and 8th, respective ly, in this week's national rankings. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at the Porter Gym at Sheridan College in Oakville, and it's followed at 8 p.m. by the championship game o f the Sheridan Cup high school boys basketball tourney (more on that below). The Bruins set the stage for the always anticipated showdown with Humber with Tuesday night's 56-53 win over the cellar dwelling Durham Lords. It was the Bruins sixth win in a row (after a mini two-game swoon), raising their record to 8-2. Cellar dwelling or not, the Lords are the only team, other than Humber, to beat the two-time defending provincial champion Bruins this season. And Tuesday's encounter was anoth er close one. Sheridan jumped on the Lords early, taking a 13-2 lead before the Lords came back with an 18-11 run to close it to 24-20 for the Bruins at the break. In the second half, the Bruins offence struggled but thanks to som e great defence, Sheridan managed to build their lead up to 10 and lead it 50-40 with four minutes remaining. The Lords got things going on offence, thanks to the play o f Cubanborn Juan Vasquez-Morejon, in the line up for the first time. The smooth shooting forward scored six points as the Sheridan lead was cut to 51-47 with a minute to go. The Bruins were in good shape but a controversial play by the ref almost cost Sheridan the win. After a timeout, Sheridan inbounded. the ball but the pass hit the ref standing out o f bounds and deflected to a Durham player. The Bruins stood around expecting a whistle, which did n't come, while the Lords teed up a trey to cut the deficit to 51-50 with 50 sec onds left. But give credit to the Bruins who refocused and came back with a basket, a blocked shot and two foul shots to build the lead back to five and they held on for the win. "Our offence wasn't very good," said Bruins coach Jim Flack. "But thankfully our defence was again out standing like it has been for the last few weeks." Chris Bennett led the Bruins with 15 points and seven rebounds. Shane Bascoe scored 10 points with six assists and four steals. Elvis Dennis chipped in with eight points and three steals and Ricardo Edwards was a force, defensively -- 11 rebounds and four blocks to go along with five points. Donald Savage led Durham with 21 points and Vasquez-Morejon added 13.
