The Zitmanis family is currently preparing to move in temporarily with a neighbour. Other neighbours have given them clothing and even the loan o f a car. All seven people in the home escaped, Zitmanis and his wife Jacquie, their two chil dren, Lucas, 3, and Zachary, 4, a young nephew Jacob Pollitt, his mother-in-law Jean Reaume, and a male tenant who lived in the basement. The family was awakened by barking from their dog, Max, a golden retriever. "He gave me an extra four-minute head start . . . I'm definitely going to buy him a steak din ner. "It was about 5:36 in the morning," said Zitmanis, "and my wife Jacquie asked me to `go shut the dog up.' "So, I went downstairs, opened the front door, and saw flames coming out o f the garage." Zitmanis, part-owner o f Russell Hockey Enterprises, said his first thoughts were turned to the safety o f his two children, and his mother-inlaw, whose bedrooms were directly above the garage. "I flew upstairs and grabbed the kids, and. woke everybody else up. `Then I came downstairs, and four minutes later, when I grabbed the phone to call 911 with Zachary in my arm, the upstairs fire alarm went off.
