Friday, February 4, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 3 Councillors reluctantly approve grant to college (Continued from page 1) Announcing ... Mr. Brian Curry, RVP & Director, Branch Manager is pleased to announce that J. Gordon Corbett has joined the Oakville office from the Merrill Lynch Galleria Office in Toronto. Gordon has been with Merrill Lynch and its predecessor companies since 1990. Gordon will continue to service his Toronto clients as well as become more active in the Oakville community. Gordon specializes in dealing with retirees, business owners and the dental community. His expertise encompasses investment strategy, tax and estate planning. As Canada's pre-eminent financial services organization serving the individual investor Merrill Lynch is dedicated to providing its clients with the most complete financial advice. We are very excited Gordon has chosen Merrill Lynch's Oakville office to continue his career and provide the community with objective, dedicated advice. Super Build Fund money is accessed. 'Tm going to hold my nose on this one," said Ward 6 councillor Kurt Franklin, who reluctantly voted for the grant. Ward 5 councillor Liz Behrens, howev er, was unequivocal in her opposition, say ing there are simply too many nuts-andbolts infrastructure projects that need fund ing first. "I don't want to hold my nose," she said. "This is not about Sheridan College. This is about spending property tax dollars on things to benefit every resident of Oakville." Town Manager Harry Henderson explained that Sheridan's request will not delay any capital projects currently in the 2000-2009 forecast, nor will it impact the tax rate since the $1 million would be taken from the Capital Reserve. On the flipside to Behrens - who wor ried about projects already bumped from the forecast - Oakville Economic Alliance Board chair Tom McCormack said he sees the project as something the Town should actively support "To me, this is an idea that can't lose," he said. "This is a very good opportunity for the Town of Oakville. A million dollars will go a long way in this case." Added Oakville Chamber of Commerce president Bob Griesbach: "Sheridan is one of the assets that puts Oakville on the world map." Ward 1 councillor Kevin Flynn stood his ground and said that the Town should not be in the education business. He said that the municipality is in the economic development business, however, so the incubator concept makes sense as an investment The $1 million would go towards Sheridan's proposed Communication, Culture and Information Technology (CCIT) facility at its Oakville Campus. The money - which represents about 6% of the total $16.75 million cost of the facility - would be spread out over five years starting in 2001. (The $200,000 a year would amount to less than 1% on the millrate.) The college has applied for funding under the province's Super Build Growth Fund, a new $10 billion initiative announced last October. The CCIT education program will be unique to North America by combining arts, science and digital media to produce "job ready" graduates. Students will earn a combined university/college communica tions degree over four years. CCIT will accommodate 300 students per year at facilities to be built at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) and Sheridan College in Oakville. This, said Sheridan president Sheldon Levy, would put "Canada's best college and best university together in Oakville." Approximately 5,000 sq. ft. of space in CCIT has been allocated for the start-up of new digital media businesses - the incuba tor for new enterprises mentioned earlier. There are no guarantees, of course, that any business will become part of the communi ty Levy promised Council that the incuba tor would be a "real partnership" with the Town, although exactly what form this would take he couldn't say.
