Friday, February 4, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 5 D o g (Continued from page 1) a le rte d s le e p in g fa m ily t o h o u s e fire "I was able to get the whole family out through the back door onto the back deck." Zitmanis said he ran around the side of the house "to see how bad the fire was, and by this time, it had gotten far worse." He said all three vehicles at the house, one in the garage and two parked about 10 feet in front, were "completely engulfed" in flames. "Then, I rushed back to the deck to check on the family, just to make sure they were still safe. I told them to move. We hopped over some fences to get away to safety." Once he got the family safely away from the house, Zitmanis said he went back into the house, knocked on his tenant's door, found the room full of smoke and later saw him out on the street. "Seeing' him standing there made me feel good that he got out safely," said Zitmanis. "All of us were out before the fire department came," he said. The family spent the week at a local hotel and are currently mak ing arrangements to live temporari ly with a neighbour. Zitmanis' mother-in-law is staying with close friends of the family. The family, after sitting in neighbours' cars for about an hour to keep warm, spent Monday with their friends and neighbours across the street, Ian and Mary Marchese, of 2151 Rebecca St. The Marcheses were roused from their sleep by the fire. "At about 5:30 in the morning, 1 heard popping sounds, so I checked my alarm," said Ian Marchese. "Then I looked out the window, and everything I saw was orange. I jumped out of bed and called 911." Marchese, a Town of Oakville public works employee, and his wife Mary, who works at Tom's Place, took the day off work to help their neighbours, providing warmth, food and clothing. The Marcheses were also grateful for the community's support of the couple's efforts to house the fire victims, and for providing additional clothing and food. `The neighbours, firefighters, the ambulance crews, and the police were all exceptional in offering support and help," said Zitmanis. "One neighbour next door loaned me his car, and I still have his boots. The neighbours behind us gave us clothing . . . we had lots of neighbours helping us out," Zitmanis said. `The bottom line is that the whole fam ily is safe, and everybody's healthy. "My insurance broker (VinceTomenson-Dickerson) has offered me a TV and a VCR. And, my insurance adjuster (Dominion of Canada) has also been very supportive and understanding." The fire caused an estimated damage over $225,000. Max, the family's golden retriever and two of their four cats also escaped are are now in kennels. One cat perished in the fire, and anoth er, a fluffy orange cat with a black magic mark on its paw, is missing. -- JO S H U A CREEK T R A D IN G -- d g § |L OPEN1 .
