D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday June 28, 2000 Toyota Corolla options to suit every driver's need Toyota seems to have fallen hard for the miracle of variable valve timing technology, and is now using it in a number of its vehicles for 2000. Case in point is the Corolla, whose 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine now puts out 125 horsepower, a gain of five from last year. The Camry-based Corolla comes in three versions: VE; CE; and LE. A number of option packages are available to complement each model, from the CE and LE touring package that adds bigger tires, unique instrumentation, two additional speakers, rear spoiler and a ground effects package, to the LE which adds air condi tioning, ABS and a full-size spare tire. The base transmission is a five-speed manual with a threespeed automatic available as an option on base VE models. A four-speed automatic is option al on the both VE and midline CE and standard on the LE. Help car keep its cool with under-hood inspection · Most people take the time to · check the rubber on their car tires before heading out on a vacation trip. However, the rub ber under the hood is just as important as the rubber around the rims. Broken belts and burst radiator hoses are two of the ! most common causes of engine ! failure on the road. Rubber components, such as hoses and belts, exist in a hot, hostile environment. On a July day, the temperature under the hood can rise to above 250 degrees. To keep the engine cool, more than 7,500 gallons of coolant per hour will circu late through hoses at up to 18 pounds of pressure. With demands like these, periodic inspections are just common sense. You can inspect a cooling system yourself or take the car to your local mechanic. Cooling system inspections are not time-consuming. By making an appointment in advance, you can take care of this on your lunch hour, before your family departs for a road trip. Because they stock a wide range of belts and hoses, chances are most cooling sys tem specialists will have replacements on hand, if replacement is necessary. The goal of a cooling system inspection is to make sure your cooling system is in good shape before you leave home. The mechanic will look for worn, damaged or leaking parts. n Be an informed car buyer Aside from choosing a make and model, one of the most important deci sions facing the car buyer is who to buy from. Motor-vehicle experts at Ontario's consumer ministry want car buyers to know about two programs that can help them make a well-informed choice. The buyer of a car less than four years old may be protected by the Ontario Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (OMVAP) and a vehicle of any age is covered under the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund (MVDCF), provided it was bought from a provincially registered dealer. OMVAP is an arbitration program to settle disputes between consumers and auto producers when cars driven for per sonal or family use - not commercial vehicles - show signs of manufacturing defects. "Whether you bought a Lamborghini or a Land Rover, if it's a lemon you may be awarded compensation for repairs or even replacement of the vehicle under this plan," says Bob Pierce, the min istry's registrar of motor vehicles. Because the plan is funded by manu facturers and importers of cars in Ontario, only residents of the province may apply for arbitration. When applications are made to OMVAP's central office, the files are handled by one of six branches of the Better Business Bureau across the province or the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Ontario. One of the offices will contact the applicant and ask for any documents needed for the case. A neutral third party will then be assigned to arbitrate.
