A n d re w H e id e m a n fir 829-0018 SportsWednesday The two-time defending Ontario Cup champion Wiberg Oakville Cobras girls U-14 rep soccer team took a successful first step in defend ing their title this past weekend as they swept a qualifying tourney held at Shell Park. In a a five-team format, the Cobras won all four games, outscoring their opposition 16-0. Katie McKenna was aboard for all the shutouts. In the first day of play the Cobras recorded a pair of 4-0 victories over Ajax (Laura Bandy 2, Corey Morgan and Vanessa Dumlao) and the Oakville Explosion in torrential rain (Karen Zmirak 3 and Corey Morgan). The second day of play saw the Cobras pick up where they left off, winning 5-0 over Markham (Karen Zmirak 2, Leslie Wilkins, Ally Skinner and Corey Morgan). This set up the all-important fourth and final game against Barrie. Although a little tentative, at first, against a physical Barrie side, the Oakville won both Ontario Cup qualifying tourna ments it hosted in the U-14 division, including the girls game seen here. This game actually featured two Oakville teams, which is a bit of a rarity in Ontario Cup action -- the Explosion (left) and Cobras. Photo by Julie Fairrie You'll eat up our new menu! Jessica Povilaitis capitalized on a through ball with a strong shot into the corner of the goal to give Oakville a 1-0 half-time lead. In the second half, the game was sealed by quick back-to-back goals from Karen Zmirak, one off a clever feed from Adrienne Johnstone and the other on a great feed from C orev Morgan. The Cobras will in Ontario Cup quarterfinal action at Shell Park on August 12. (Ed. Note: complete tourney results were not filed with the Ontario Soccer Association, as o f our press deadline.) LEAGUE PLAY The Cobras played back to league games last week. They won the first one 6-1 over Waterloo (Karen Zmirak 2, Leslie Wilkins, Corey Morgan, Laura Bandy and Vanessa Dumlao). The second was much tighter but with Oakville prevailing 1-0 against Niagara Falls, thanks to a great finish by Amanda Cicchini. The Cobras defence was outstanding with Katie Capron, in particular, in fine form. ... Oakville Strikers shock defending champions, to earn quarterfinal berth against Brampton The Oakville Strikers U-14 boys rep soccer team not only won their Ontario Cup qualifying tournament in Oakville over the weekend, but, impressively, they knocked out last year's defending champs in the process. And fittingly, it boiled down to the last game with Oakville shutting out defending champion West Rouge 2-0. A win by West Rouge would have sent them through. Oakville now faces Brampton in a Cup quarterfinal match. Going into the final game, Oakville boasted two wins and a tie. Oakville played an excellent all round game, especially defensively, and shut down the very talented West Rouge players quickly, forcing them to play an up-tempo game. When the game was still even at 0-0, Andrew Greco made a key save on a penalty shot. This shifted the momentum to Oakville and they soon responded with a goal -- perhaps the goal of the sea son. Daniel Hannigan-Daley culminated a fine series of passes with an unstop pable boot from 25 yards. He almost provided an instant encore only to be thwarted by a good save. Taylor Matthews then hit the cross bar with a direct free kick. The second half was just as good, Oakville playing well defensively and actually having more chances than their opponents with quick counterplay. And with 10 minutes to go, Oakville was rewarded for their efforts with an insurance marker, from Michael Medeiros who a comer kick into the top comer. Oakville opened up the tourney with a 0-0 tie against a physical Kitchener team. The first half was fairly even with no scoring. The second half saw the Strikers have more of the play as the game wore on, forcing the Kitchener goaltender to record three fine saves in the final 15 minutes. Andrew Greco recorded Oakville's shutout. Oakville then beat Niagara Falls 5-1 despite not playing particularly well. Goals were scored by Michael Medeiros (2), Josh Shrum, John-Mark Ssenyonjo and Tousif Islam. In the third game, a win by Richmond Hill would have sent them on to the Ontario Cup quarterfinals. But Oakville responded with one of their best games of the year and a decisive 52 victory. Goals were scored by Petro Czoli (2), Michael Medeiros, Adam Maduri and Ryan Tuske. LEAGUE PLAY In league play earlier, Oakville remained undefeated, beating Hamilton Sparta 2-1. Scoring for Oakville were JohnMark Ssenyonjo and Ryan Tuske. The Waterfront Festival roller hockey tournament was a huge suc cess with 98 teams taking part, including this 18&U game which the Oakville Coyotes (red and white jersey) won 8-0 over York. Sporting institutions team up to help youth On Wednesday, July 12 at Wyldewood Golf and Country Club a charity golf tournament is being held by two of Oakville's more venerable sporting institutions. And they are the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame and the Oakville Blades provincial junior hockey team. It's a shotgun start at 1 p.m. fol lowed by dinner and prizes. The two are obvious partners to pair up. The burgeoning Oakville Hall of Fame, besides paying tribute to Oakville's great sporting heroes of the past and present, also aims to help Oakville's athletes of the future through a scholarship fund. For their part, the Oakville Blades provide an outlet for provincial junior A hockey right in our community, and they traditionally have a very sizeable local contingent. For instance, Mike Tarantino, who was the Blades' captain and leading scorer last year (and 5th in the west division) is a home grown product of the Oakville Rangers system. Traditionally, the provincial junior A league provides a good spring board for hockey players to go on and play hockey at the college and uni versity level. And the Blades have also set up a scholarship fund, available to their teen-aged players who wish to go on to post secondary education.
