Of the new jobs created in Ontario this decade, almost one in five are expected to be trades-related occupations, according to Flynn. "We know when we reach potential tradespeople early with introductory training, they stand a better chance of completing apprenticeship training and enjoying rewarding, well-paid careers in the trades. By investing in pre-apprenticeship programs we're ensuring that people in Ontario get the skills and training they need for the jobs of today and tomorrow," stated Deb Matthews, minister of advanced education and skills development, in a release. "What we need to ensure in the province, to ensure we have that healthy economic future, is that we have a highly-skilled workforce ready to meet this demand, to keep our province competitive," said Flynn. Since 2003, annual apprenticeship registrations in Ontario have increased from 17,100 to more than 25,600, Flynn noted. Currently, there are close to 75,000 apprentices "actively working" around the province. "Pre-apprenticeship training simply is this -- it helps people develop the knowledge, the skills and the work experience they need to find work as apprentices," said Flynn. "It will also help groups who have been typically under represented in the trades, such as those new to the country, women, indigenous people, those who have been unemployed and even those who have become homeless." Sheridan College President and ViceChancellor Dr. Mary Preece said the skilled trades have "long been a mainstay" of its programs. It currently has more than 1,000 students enrolled in trades, pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs. "Sheridan is committed to the opportunities for collaboration, for smooth passage from one credential to the next and for enhancing the equipment resources available here for you, as students, in the trades," said Preece.
