25 | Thursday, March 23, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Patients and colleagues remember a caring person continued from p.3 "The thing with Fred was he didn' t treat us like patients," the 71-year-old remembered, noting he sometimes left treats out for his clients and invit ed them to office holiday gatherings. "Everyone who walked into the office was a friend." When Boland' s daughter, Victoria, need a chi ropractor, he recommended Mejilla. When she didn' t have the money to pay for the treatments required, Mejilla cut her a deal. He would only charge her for the X-rays and the ini tial examination as long as she gave him a copy of the album her band was working on. "To not be able to share that with him breaks my heart," Victoria said. Pete Angerilli, another Burlington chiroprac tor, first met Mejilla when he delivered an inspir ing guest lecture to his class at the Canadian Me morial Chiropractic College. The two reconnected when both had clinics in the area. "For some chiropractors, it' s a job," he said, "but for a lot of us, helping people is really a pas sion. He was definitely that kind of guy" While Mejilla' s dedication to his work was un wavering, his commitment to his family was his top priority, said Mike Schultz, a Burlington chi ropractor whose Plains Road East office Mejilla started working in seven years ago. He recalled Mejilla, a man of faith, telling him about the time he cancelled all of his afternoon appointments to take his five children to a movie. "I thought it was just crazy but it' s family first," Schultz said. A testimonial on the Mejilla Family Chiroprac tic website, attributed to an Elizabeth Hutchison from October 2016, states, "I met Dr. Fred three years ago at the Festival of Friends in Ancaster. He offered a free consultation at his clinic. On Mejilla' s Facebook page there are several notes of remembrance. One from Glen A. Mac Millan states, "Thanking you through tear-filled eyes Dr. Fred for your compassion, warmth, hu mour and showing me how beautiful another human being can be. You were a very bright light to many and I know I always felt a little healed just walking into your clinic. Your friendship will always be remembered. Rest in piece, my friend." A message of the Mejilla Family Chiropractic Facebook site from 2013 stated, "Dr. Fred Mejilla is an extremely dedicated man, who is a father to five amazing children.... "Dr. Fred has 20-plus years as a chiropractor and to this day continues on the learning path to better himself and his practice. "He attends mul tiple seminars and information sessions, and is a sponge when it comes to learning everything he can to be better for his p a tien ts.. Dr. Mejilla treats his patients with the upmost care and re spect and believes everyone should be cared for regardless of financial restraints. Anyone who has met Dr. Fred will agree he is one caring and amazing Dr.!" The clinic' s website states that Mejilla' s edu cation includes a Doctor of Chiropractic de gree from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and a Bachelor' s degree in biochemistry from the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
