C4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 16, 2000 `Hom s capture eighth straight N FC playoff title The O akville Longhorns continue to rewrite Northern Football Conference and Canadian Amateur Football record books. The Longhorns easily captured their 8th consecu tive Northern Football Conference (NFC) champi onship as they downed the Sault Ste Marie Storm 393 in the final played at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton last Saturday. Oakville got off to a fast start as league scoring champ Dana Segin, of Oakville, booted the opening kickoff through the end zone for the single to start the game. The `Homs then had touchdowns from slotbacks Domenic Camastro and Tom Wighton to give them a 14-3 edge at half-time. The Sault's John Maoine booted a 33-yard field goal for what would be the Sault's only points of the game. In the second half, it was all Longhorns. Touchdowns from Camastro, Gifford Rose and veter an pivot Mark Demerling, plus a safety touch for line backer Wayne Sliwinski cemented the victory. For their efforts, Demerling and Sliwinski were cited as the offensive and defensive players of the game, respectively. This is not the first time these two have garnered these accolades. Demerling, the ageless forty-something pivot from Burlington, had previous offensive MVP honours in 1993, 1994 and 1996, while Sliwinski earned defen sive MVP kudos in 1998. The `Horns have not played a game in Oakville the past two seasons, basing themselves out of Burlington. w m rn m m m Ageless, forty-something quarterback Mark Demerling of Burlington picked up yet another championship game MVP as the 'Horns routed Sault Ste Marie 39-3 for their eighth straight title.
