Burlington 331-8500 Hyundai will try to grab a piece of the sport utility vehicle segment with the all-wheel-drive 2001 Santa Fe that goes on sale in the fall. HYUNDAI of OAKVILLE MODEL YEAR-END President's Award W inner TIME Hyundai introduces Sante Fe into popular SUV market By JIM ROBINSON SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER orean econocar maker Hyundai will jump into the boom ing North American Sport Utility Vehicle segment with its first SUV called the Santa Fe. Much as Ford, Mazda, and GM have already done with the Escape, Tribute, and Aztek, the Santa Fe will be based on a sedan chassis with all-wheel-drive and macho looks. In the case of the Santa Fe, the five-seater comes with the 24-valve, twin-cam V6 from the Sonata. This is a very smooth and flexible engine and in the Santa Fe it is bored out 200 cc to 2.7litres to produce 185 hp and 189 ft/lb of torque. It is attached to the same four-speed electron ic, adaptive Sonata automatic transmission that gives the driver an option of manual shift override. In terms of getting power to the ground, Santa Fe fol lows the route already well traveled by the other SUVmakers of using viscous cou plings to shift power to the rear wheels from the normal front-drive mode if traction is lost. Suspension too is routine, with coil springs over MacPherson struts at the front bolstered by an anti-roll bar. The rear is also fully independent with trailing arms and multi-links with hydraulic as opposed to gas shocks. In terms of appearance there is a hint of the Sonata here and the Tiburon there, but stylists wisely stuck to more Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4-like looks although the Santa Fe, at 4.5metres long, is bigger than the other two so-called "soft roaders". In size it is sim ilar to the Mazda Tribute and slightly smaller than a Ford Explorer. Inside the Santa Fe offers 2,860 litres (100.7 cu. ft.) of passenger volume and 864 litres (29.4 cu. ft.) of cargo room. Airbags are second generation and there is a kill switch for the passenger front airbag if a child seat is put there, although there is room enough in the back seat for three adults. Seatbelts at the front have automatic pretensioners. In terms of features the base GL comes with power windows, locks, mir rors, cruise along with a CD player. Part of the appearance package is the twotone plastic moldings on the side and bumpers. Lastly a rear washer/wiper is standard. Step up to the GLS and there's leather with heat, ABS, air conditioning, privacy tinted glass, keyless entry and two obligatory front foglamps. Traditional Hyundai weaknesses have been weight and build quality. Anyone who remembers the Pony or Stellar will understand. To their credit, Hyundai has made quantum leaps to bring quality of mate rials and ride and handling up to indus try benchmarks and they are closing the gap. The upside is Hyundai makes up for any shortcomings with lower prices. One of the autowriters Hyundai has permitted to drive the truck expects the GL to sell in the mid $20,000 bracket with the GLS for under $30,000. If this is correct, it will not be much of a sav ing beside the Pontiac Aztek or the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute twins. However, Hyundai products are always honestly built, and if the main tenance schedule is followed, they should provide years of faithful service. driving tips L o e k w o o d » e x p a n a in ^ -- Never set off straight from work. Have a sleep and light meal first. -- Remember to check gas, oil and water levels. -- Take a snack and something to drink - all night restaurants (like garages) can be few and far between when you're off the beat en track. Don't be tempted to eat, drink as you drive. Find a safe place to stop. This will also give you the chance to stretch your legs -- some thing you should do at least every two hours. -- Don't be tempted to put the foot down when there isn't much traffic about. You're liable to approach a junc tion too fast and maybe meet anoth er driver doing exactly the same. f Purchase Financing up to 36 m onths on all 2000 Dodge Carav A ll ve fiicle st|w be c le a re d lS I ^rn a k e w a y for i * . the bulldozers! h i Purchase^ Fin a n cin g 000 Neon M any to choose from, all colours.
