Having recently canoed 225 kilometres over nine days from Kingston to Ottawa, and portaged their canoe into the executive boardroom of the Chateau Laurier, the pair plan to paddle from Whitehorse to Dawson along the Yukon River. Daniel and Angus are canoeing to raise $25,000 for the Oakville United Way and the Oakville YMCA. "We're almost half-way there, and because the Millennium actually runs for two years, we're going to paddle in the Yukon to raise the rest of the money," says Daniel. To date, they have raised between $11,000 and $12,000 with more money coming in. But, in addition to the fundraising aspect of their adventure, Daniel and Angas had a lot of fun making history. Arriving in Ottawa on Canada Day, the pair navigated through the locks of the Rideau Canal to the Ottawa River, then turned around and portaged uphill along Rideau Street to the Chateau Laurier. "And with about 100,000 people partying up and down the street, it looked it we were just part of the festivities," said Daniel, who had contacted relatives to help carry their canoe uphill. "It was n't the distance we had trouble with - it was the steep hill." Once in front of the Chateau Laurier, a baffled door staff didn't quite know what to make of their desire to carry the 16-foot canvas covered cedar strip canoe inside the hotel lobby.
