C2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 9, 2000 White hits podium third race in a row By Kathy Yanchus SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER It was another tight race, but when it was all over, Matt White had finished third and on the podium again during Round 6 of the Formula Ford 1600 series at Mosport International Raceway this past weekend. No doubt the 20-year-old Oakville resident would have preferred a victory and a quantum leap in the points standings; as it is now, he is 18 points off the lead behind Jonathan Macri and Frederick Martel, the latter finishing second behind Quebec's Jean-Sebastien Bedard in Saturday's event. It was an exciting race as White took the lead from Bedard, who grabbed it again, then lost it to Macri, before edging into first for good. "I did not have enough top speed," commented White following the race. "Every lap, I was losing seven or eight car lengths...I didn't win the race but at least I am on the podium." After some controversy over whether or not Martel passed White under a yellow flag, race officials decided the race results held up and Martel and White finished second, third, respectively. `T he evidence was inconclusive. There was not enough evidence to issue a penalty to Martel," stated Eric Berman, spokesperson for the Formula Ford 1600 race series. The next race is three weeks from now at Mosport International Raceway as part of the CASCAR National Race Weekend. Oakville's Matt White hit the podium for the third race in a row at Mosport over the weekend, settling for third place in the Formula Ford 1600 race over the weekend.
