Both teams scoring runs in the first inning, the score remained 2-2 until late in the game when D.H. Larry Withnell homered to give the Athletics the game-winning run. In their second game on Saturday, Tom Chater, Brian Prowse and Todd Townsend com bined for several hits to lead the team to its sec ond victory of the day, beating Mount Albert Mudhens by a score of 8-0. Sunday proved to be a very long day for the committed Athletics. In their first of three Sunday games, the Athletics beat a young Harriston team 5-1. Powered by strong hitting, pitching and stellar defensive play by Joe Beamish and Tim Lamers, the team capitalized on several unforced errors. On Sunday afternoon, the team took on a sea soned team from Bracebridge. Down 1-0 in the sixth inning, Todd Townsend launched a solo home run to get the team back on track. Mike Bouchard the seasoned left-fielder deflated Bracebridge's hopes by tracking down what seemed an uncatchable fly ball. In the top of the seventh, the coach and catcher Bill Pickard made several key moves to give the team its fourth win. After reaching base on an error, Larry Withnell was replaced by speedster Larry Old. With one out, Pickard asked Darryl Hebert to sacrifice bunt, moving Old into scoring position. Coming in off the bench, Joe Richer scored Old with a single to left field. In the team's third contest of the day and sixth of the weekend, Gordon Scott would shine his brightest on the drizzly Sunday night. After pitching the first five games, Scott faced the strong hitting Seabringville Sting. Striking out seventeen in the contest, Scott also made a div ing catch and drove in a run. Tom Chater had two RBI's in the game that saw the Athletics jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning en route to the 5-1 win. Monday morning Scott was asked to go one more time. In their seventh game of the weekend, the battery of Scott and Pickard teamed up to face the Baltimore Selects. The team put four runs on the board but stranded several runners. With a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning, Palermo was almost assured of a win, but the Selects would not be denied, scoring three runs to beat the Athletics 5-4. The Ontario Amateur Softball Association did not award Most Valuable Player honours this year, but without a doubt Gordon Scott would have been among the top candidates for the hon our. More commonly known as `Hacker', Scott is the backbone of the pitching staff and was referred to by his teammates as the `Bionic Man' after his incredible show of stamina. THE PLAYERS: Larry Withnell, Mike Bouchard, Brian Prowse, Tom Chater, Gord Scott, Joey Beamish, Darryl Hebert, Bill Pickard, Tim Lamers, Kevin Old, Todd Townsend and Joe Richer. ^ 1 88888 jlij * ja u rjja J lira i f f.
