C4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 2, 2000 Top 10 finish for Dziabel at Ontario Jr. cham pionship Oakville's Jason Dziabel put in another steady round at the Ontario junior boys golf championship a top-10 finish. A member of the White Oaks Golf and Country Club, he fired a fourth round 76 on Friday to lock up 8th place. His four round total was 302 (73-77-77-76). And here's how he fared on the leaderboard after each round: 4-7-7- Explosion unlucky to draw crosstown rivals The Oakville Explosion were unlucky enough to draw two-time defending champion Oakville Cobras in their Ontario Cup girls U14 preliminary round tournament and could not advance after losing to the Cobras 4-0. The girls, however, did manage a tie against Markham and a victory against Dixie for a respectable tour ney. The first week of June was very busy for the Explosion with two league games and their League Cup first round game. On June 3rd, Dixie came visiting and Explosion man aged a 1 - 1 tie on a goal from Jessica Sacripante set up by Tanya Dias. The game was up and back and very evenly played, with strong perfor mances from Keeper Katarina Vulic, Brooke Johnson and Jessica Turner. Their league game on the June 9th with visiting Kitchener was a scoreless draw, but a game largely dominated by Explosion as Kitchener managed only two shots. Kathryn Matheson anchored the defence and Alyssa Szcelecki and Lisa Telebar had fine games. Lauren Pulford made a game saving tackle to secure the tie with only a few min utes to go. Offensively Explosion managed a dozen shots and the Kitchener keeper was forced to make several remarkable saves, particular ly off Jessica Pudwell and Tanya Dias. Finally on July 7th, the Explosion travelled to Brantford for their first round League Cup. Brantford proved to be surpris ingly stubborn and the Explosion despite largely carrying the play. After a scoreless first half Jessica Sacripante finished a lovely effort for a 1-0 lead. However on a direct kick Brantford managed to collect a rebound from the keeper and push the tying goal in. The Explosion, in workman-like fashion, marched back up the field and put all kinds of pressure on Brantford. It paid off with Jessica Sacripante slotting home a penalty shot awarded after Tanya Dias was roughly tackled from behind just as she was set to shoot from nine yards. Brantford managed a brief flurry near the end, but the Explosion hung on to advance to the next round. 8. Sean Lowry of Wyldewood Golf Club who also made the cut from Oakville continued his climb up the field, finishing at 313 (80-81-76-76). And here's how he fared on the leaderboard after each round: 64-65-45-36. The top four represent Ontario at the Canadian junior and juvenile championships in Courtney, B.C. later this month. The tournament was won by J.C. Deacon at 292 (7575-71-71). He overtook his "good friend" Kevin Blue who had led the tourney for 69 of the 72 holes before ending up with a 294 (67-75-74-78). Vortex win their last three games The Oakville Vortex U-13A boys soccer team defeated St. Catharines Concordes 2-1 with a strong showing and then followed up with a command ing 3-1 win against Waterloo and a blistering 7-0 shutout win against Brantford. OAKVILLE 2, St. Catharines 1: Michael Rocha opened the scoring and, after St. Catharines tied it up, Craig Nazare scored the winner. Both teams went into the game boasting similar win-loss records in league play. OAKVILLE 3, Waterloo 1: Waterloo opened the scoring but then Oakville responded with a natural hat trick by Craig Nazare. OAKVILLE 7, Brantford 0: goals were scored by Craig Nazare (2), Robin Valadares (2), Michael Rocha, Tim Downey and Dominic Polla. Uzbekistan field hockey team refused Canadian visas The Central Region field hockey tournament at the Appleby College artificial turf had to go ahead without one of its featured teams, Galaba, the national club champions of Uzbekistan. The day before the tourney (on Friday), tourney orga nizers announced, in a press release, "the withdrawal of the Uzbekistan team, which were refused Canadian visa's to come play in the tournament." The Uzbekistan team were the pre-toumey favourites to meet in the championship final against Brampton's Punjab Sports. Punjab Sports certainly lived up to its billing, defeat ing Toronto Lions 2-1 in Sunday's championship game. The tourney still had some international flavour with the Dundee University varsity team from Scotland com peting. They were winless in five games. July 17 Silver medalists in Burlington The Oakville girls U-16 all star team, coached by Duncan Reid, took home a silver medal at the recent Burlington Soccer U-17 tournament. Oakville met Burlington in the championship game and opened the scoring but Burlington retaliated shortly after with a goal of their own and then took the lead just prior to half. They capitalized on com er kicks to add two more in the second half for a 4-1 final verdict. Elaine Lukowski scored Oakville's lone goal on a cross from Michele Gauer with Rachel Truant instrumental in initiating the opportunity.
