In 1988 he founded the Canadian chapter of Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors W ithout Borders. His travels and work have taken him to over 60 countries and he is regarded as a leader in Canada in the field of international health and human rights. Born in Hamilton, Dr. Heinzl began his education at the University of Toronto where he received a Bachelor of Science (1984). He also pursued graduate studies at Oxford where he conducted research about the health of refugees and at Harvard where he completed a Master of Public Health degree (1990). He is board certified in the United States in preventive medicine. In between travels, he has had a private medical practice and continues to work with refugees in southern Ontario.Dr. Heinzl introduced Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) to Canada at a time when the organization was little known outside of Europe. He assembled a national team of volunteers, and through the media and via a grassroots m ovement, Dr. Heinzl led the development of a successful MSF chapter which has now raised over $20 million dollars and sent hundreds of Canadians overseas on humanitarian medical missions. Between 1990 and 1992, Dr. Heinzl worked with M SF in M ozam bique, M alawi, Iraq and fo r a year in rem ote Cambodia. Dr. Heinzl also served in various other capacities. For exam ple, he was a United Nations election m onitor for the first presidential elections in South Africa in 1994, and informally as ajournalist covering the embargo in Haiti. He has presented scientific papers in Cuba, G renada and in the fo rm e r East G erm any and he is a frequent speaker at functions in Canada. In 1 9 9 5 he was nam ed one of C anada's one hundred " People W ho M ake A D ifference" and his portrait was published in a coffee table book by Penguin Books. This was our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. This year over 130 committee chairs, committee members, other volunteers and members of the executive and board of directors attended the event. Each volunteer received a personalized certificate of appre ciation and a gift as a small measure of thanks for their work on behalf of the Chamber during the year. To those volunteers who were not able to be present and be thanked in person, THANK YOU! Also, many thanks to the Quality Hotel and Executive Suites for supplying the venue on their beautiful patio and live entertainment and to Hampton's Restaurant for supplying the delicious BBQ and liquid refreshments. You should by now have received your copy of the Oakville 2000 Business Directory. This joint directory is the result of the partnership between the Chamber and the OEDA. I hope that you find this new format for the Chamber's business directory to be helpful in your business activities. Recently, Alan Georgeson (Chair of the Golf Sub-committee) and I had the opportu nity to present a plaque to Peter Sinuita, President of Ford Credit Canada in appreciation of four years as the major sponsor of the Chamber's annual golf tournament. Thank you very much to Ford Credit for this major annual contribution to support the Chamber's work on behalf of the Oakville business community. During the summer, members of executive, the board of directors and committee chairs will be hard at work updating the Chamber's strategic plan. The current plan has served us well over the last few years but it is now time to have another look forward to make sure our strategic direction is best geared to the needs of our members in today's business environment. On the back cover 1 noticed the following list. I thought l would share these with you, and then have you decide which of these in- your opinion 1 possess. 1. A chamber manager must be as agile as a.monkey because one spends so much time out on a limb. 2. One needs a big chin so one can lead witint,-and thick skin so one can ward off the stings sent their way. 3. One has to have strong legs so one can Stand on one's own two feet, and still be limber enough to kneel at bedtime. 4. One has to have a big mouth so one won'-Lchoke when one puts ones foot in it; and a good appetite so one can swallow one's pride and be prepared to eat one's words. 5. A chamber manager needs a deaf ear for flattery, a good ear for criticism and judgement and be able to distinguish between the two. 6. One needs a rubber neck so one can turn the other cheek, face reality, look back on history and forward to the future, confront the issues and face the music all at the same time: 7. Finally a chamber manager works under more pressure than a deep sea diver, gets more criticism, than a weatherman forecasting rain, suffers more temptation than a shoplifter in the mint, and is expected to be everywhere at once, like a chaperone at a high school prom.
