Police take to water in new boats By Tim Whitnell SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Instead of cruising the region's roads, three Halton police officers are cruising Lake Ontario in two new boats designed to keep order on the water. The new vessels, which comprise two-thirds of the combined marine unit for Halton and HamiltonWentworth police, patrol from Burlington Bay to Oakville. The vessels were actually purchased last November for almost $340,000 and have been in use since April. The police patrol season runs April lst-Sept. 31st. The capital cost of pur chasing the craft was split evenly between Halton and Hamilton-Wentworth police, as will the annual operating costs. The combined marine unit consists of nine officers and one sergeant in charge of the unit. The trio of Halton officers assigned to patrol this end of Lake Ontario are Const. Rick Solecki, Const. Andrew Olesen and Const. Scott Oldfield. Hamilton-Wentworth supplies the other six consta bles. The unit's commanding officer is Sgt. Brien Smyth of Hamilton-Wentworth police. The group is responsible for all search and rescue Halton and HamiltonWentworth officers help sailors and watch for law infractions operations in the immediate area and is the primary response unit for search and rescue operations between 50 Point (Stoney Creek) and Winston Churchill Boulevard (Mississauga). The area encompasses more than 325 sq. km. Solecki, a Burlington res ident and 10-year veteran of the marine unit, said the new vessels are a welcome addi tion. "The Whaler is a lot faster than anything we've had in the past. It can run in rough waters, too," he said. "The other boats we had were at least 12 years old, but they served their purpose and did a good job." Solecki was referring to the pair of older boats that Halton police have put up for sale. Whatever the ser vice gets for the Halton Star and an older Boston Whaler will help offset the capital cost of the new vessels. Solecki said the prime role of marine officers to date has been to enforce the Shipping and Liquor Licence acts and to ensure boater safety. They respond ed to two non-fatal boating accidents last year. The following is some technical data about the new boats: · The Alliance I, a Hike model, is a nine-metre boat powered by twin 230-horsepower, turbo-charged, marine diesel engines. The cabin-type model has a cruising speed of about 50 km-h with a top speed of about 70 km-h. It has a range of 400 km, weighs seven tons, can hold 20 people and runs with a crew of 2-4. The $200,000 vessel can be used in deep water and in inclement conditions where waves are high. It is also the main boat to be used in major lake rescue operations in the area. · The Alliance II boat is a Boston Whaler "Justice" model. It is an open-concept boat that is deemed unsinkable due to its double-hull. foam-injected construction. Even if the craft splits in two it will not sink. Alliance II is eight metres long and is powered by twin 225 hp Mercury outboard motors. It is the far speedier of the two boats with a top speed of about 110 km-h and a range of 240 km. It carries a crew of two with capacity for 12 people. Both new boats come equipped with radar, a Global Positioning System, a police radio and an EPIRB system that deploys a float ing distress beacon should a vessel submerge more than two metres. The larger Alliance I also has a computer system that allows it to `talk' to police stations and cruisers on the road. · The Halton/H-W marine unit also has access to a smaller Boston Whaler. The five-metre vessel is four years old and is used primar ily for shoreline, harbour or river searches or patrols. KERRY W. LOST: 33 lbs. 46" ^ "The staff w as so encouraging.
