As part of the 12th annual Birmingham Bank Bed Challenge, individuals, banks will compete in a race to conclude a fundraising initiative taking place throughout April. More than 40 bank branches in Oakville will raise funds to purchase patient care beds for the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). Since 2006, the race has raised more than $1.3 million to buy patient beds at OTMH. The cost of a hospital bed can range from $15,000, for a basic type, to $50,000 for a intensive care unit model, says to Tina Triano, OHF CEO. "We've had quite an awesome run for 12 years for this event. I hope it continues. We will always need the hospital and we will always need beds," said Triano. The challenge was established by former Scotiabank president and OHF board member, the late Bruce Birmingham, who recognized the ongoing need for new hospital beds. "He wanted to see the intrinsic, competitive nature of the banks, all put together for a good common use and for something the entire community uses, which is the hospital," said Triano. It' s a highly-competitive nature out there, but still collegial and we're grateful for that," said Triano.
