Ferdinand `Dr. Fred' Mejilla, 50, of Oakville, died in hospital on March 17 as a result of gunshot wounds suffered at his Burlington business, Mejilla Family Chiropractic clinic, on March 16. Halton police say David Williamson, 44, of Burlington, shot Mejilla and then himself, in a murder-suicide. Williamson was a former patient of Mejilla's. The gun used was a small-calibre handgun owned and registered to Williamson. A long-time friend of Mejilla's, Dr. Paul Groulx established the gofundme page to raise funds for the chiropractor's five children -- Mackenzie, Nadia, Rogue, Rayne and Shae -- and funds will go directly to the family to put the money in a trust for the children. According to the page, Groulx first met Mejilla when he was "just a 23-year-old paramedic." They quickly became friends. "When Fred walked into a room, it automatically filled with his enthusiasm and good cheer... even when times were tough," said Groulx. As of press time Thursday, March 30, the page had obtained more than $53,000, exceeding the original target of $50,000. "This fundraiser is meant explicitly for the kids. For their immediate and future needs. Very real needs need to be met. The fridge needs to be filled, the house needs to be heated. All the same things you provide for your kids," said Groulx.
