D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 19, 2000 Little league Majors face first hurdle to World Series The path to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Oakville majors starts Friday in Dundas. The Oakville Majors, a team select ed from the ten-team Oakville Majors house league, face Orangeville for their first game in the double-knockout Ontario District playdowns. The 2000 Oakville team is managed by Duke Dickson and has a formidable pitching staff of Anthony Amone, Jeff Egan, Russell Gilroy and Kyle Grootjans. These pitchers also double up as position players: Amone (first base), Egan (outfield), Gilroy (second base) and Grootjans (third base). Liam Bryant, Zack Dickson, Paul Mooney and Justin Neufeld(from the Little League hot-bed of Langley, B.C.) round out the infield, while Chris Bonnell, Daniel Hanley, Brendan Skeete and Jason Tuske man the out field. Missing from photo is Liam BryanL Junior Little Leaguers host District Championships Oakville plays host to the Little League Junior District Championships this week at Neyagawa Park. The first game starts tonight at 6:30 p.m. and winds up Sunday with the District Championship game. "We've got a great group of guys who can taste the win," said Augie Bonnano, the team's head coach. Assistant coach Richard Stokes added, "A lot of these guys have been playing together for a number of years, and they're getting their strategy and plays down to a reflex action." Over the past number of weeks, the boys, aged 13-14, have been holding a number of practices and exhibition games to refine their skills, their exhi bition matches have included such notable teams as Dundas, Erindale and others. Bronte Tae Kwon Do Club brings home National medals The Bronte Tae Kwon Do Club won six medals in the Canadian National Tae Kwon Do Junior Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick, July 1st. In the Patterns Division (judging based on balance, control, power, speed and concentration) Chelsea Plunkett won a gold medal and Destiny Chrysler and Alex Pallo earned bronze medals. In the Sparring competition (judging based on scoring on the targeted areas, head and body of their opponents dur ing two 1.5 minute rounds): Alex Pallo won the gold with B. J. Meakings and Nick Leblanc winning silvers. Prior to the nationals, Bill Pallo, the owner/operator of Bronte Tae Kwon Do, took his students to a summer camp at the Chung Won Institute of Tae Kwon Do, the host of the nationals, for intense training under the guidance of headmaster Won Kap Chung.
