D4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 19, 2000 `Dean' of coaches honoured for commitment White Oaks coach Dean Oldershaw receives prestigious O FS S A A award By Kathy Yanchus S P E C IA L T O T H E BEAVER Coaching is Dean Oldershaw's life. You name the sport, Oldershaw has no doubt coached it, everything from badminton to wrestling. He destroys the myth that coaches are those who can't. He has played a number of sports, but is best known for his elite paddling skills which took him to two Olympic Games and eight World Championships. Oldershaw has much to offer young athletes striving to reach their potential, no matter what their athletic pursuit, and he was recently rewarded for his tremendous dedication to them with the Pete Beach Award, presented by the Ontario Federation of Secondary Schools' Athletic Association. The veteran coach, who has taught physical education at General Wolfe and subsequently White Oaks Secondary School for many years, has several canoe coaching awards to his credit, but this one is particularly special because he was nominat ed by his peers. "I've had lots of awards in canoeing, some of them on the water when I've crossed the finish line first," laughs Oldershaw. "But it isn't that often that a teacher receives an award in the profession. You don't expect it and it makes you feel pretty good." The award was presented during the last week of school after another successful year for Oldershaw's teams including the debut of the senior girls wrestling team, which made it to the OFSSAA finals. "The other sport I coached was the midget rugby team and we won our Halton championship," says a proud Oldershaw, who gave up his depart ment head status, so he could spend more time with the students and less on paperwork. , When the final school bell rang, however, Oldershaw's coaching responsibilities didn't end, they simply switched gears. Retired from competition now, with the excep tion of war canoe races, the father of five devotes his summers to guiding high performance midget and juvenile paddlers at the Burl-Oak Canoe Club. Twice a day throughout the summer, the former BOCC head coach is on the waters of the Sixteen Mile Creek, fine-tuning his young paddlers for competition and this year, for Olympic trials. Two of his protegees include kayaker Carrie Lightpound who is off to Sydney (and a two-time gold medal winner at last year's Pan-Am Games in K-2 and K- Photo by Barrie Erskine Dean Oldershaw holds the Pete Beach Award presented to him by the Ontario Federation of Secondary Schools' Athletic Association in recognition of his dedication towards coaching high school athletes. 4), and Adam VanKoeverden, a bronze medalist in the junior worlds and a Sydney hopeful, missing out by one spot after placing second in two Olympic trials. Oldershaw is a technician. `Technique is very important, certainly in the sport of canoeing," he says. Every stroke becomes crucial when an athlete is striving for national status, he says. Having been immersed in paddling all his life his father founded the Mississauga Canoe Club and Oldershaw himself is a member of the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame - he should know. Oldershaw was drawn to teaching while a mem ber of the national team and coaching younger pad dlers. The satisfaction he derives from watching young athletes improve has never waned. "Whether they win or not, I like seeing the joy they get from their accomplishments," says Oldershaw. After competing in the Munich and Montreal Olympics and being forced to miss the 1980 Olympics in Moscow because of the boycott, Oldershaw "retired on the spot." One of his best international performances was at the 1977 World Championships in Bulgaria where he finished sixth in kayak doubles. `That was the best performance Canada had ever had at the time. My partner was my brother, Scott." Oldershaw also placed seventh in kayak singles at two consecutive World Championships. These days, other than steering in thq back of a war canoe, which has won a Canadian champi onship, Oldershaw prefers finding satisfaction in others' accomplishments. Maybe giving of his time and expertise is selfishly motivated, offers Oldershaw, but it's a personal need. It's a passion he can't ignore. And whenever retirement from teaching comes, "coaching will still be in there some where." Having Gamje SoM Market Basket PICK YOUR OWN RASPBERRIES (Can for availability) A T C H A S .
