Wednesday, July 19, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D7 Compact Volvo series maintains traditional high standards (Continued from page D8) Interior upgrades are a little more extensive, with a new centre console design and improved seat comfort with more lateral support. "These cars represent everything Volvo stands for in a more compact, affordable package with a premium brand," said Ken Brusca, president & CEO of Volvo Canada." They are small er but in no way scaled down." Both the 4-door sedan and the 5-door wagon model are equipped with the sophisticated safety features that have come to define Volvo. The list of active and passive safety features includes: Driver and front passenger airbags with dual-level deployment and seatbelt tensioners. Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with reinforced safety cage, side impact airbags and Inflatable Curtain (IC) to protect the heads and chests of front and rear occupants. Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) rear impact technology, con sisting of seat back hinges and brackets designed to absorb rear end collision energy. Multi-channel ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD) and an optional Dynamic Stability Assistance system that manages traction in slippery driving conditions. Other safety features include threepoint seatbelts and head restraints in all five seating positions, ISO-FIX attach ments for optional Volvo-designed child seats, outer rear seats that can be fitted with integrated child booster cushions for older children and a strengthened, split-folding rear seat designed to with stand luggage impact during a collision. If safety features aren't convincing enough, the S40 and V40 also deliver admirable levels of performance - levels I tested over two days of differing dri ving conditions that included cruising on urban avenues, winding down country lanes and a somewhat illegal, high speed dash down the highway that almost got me to the airport in time. The 1.9L light-pressure turbo engine makes 160 hp @ 5250 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque. Like most turbo engines, the 1.9L 4-cylinder is happier making highspinning power than producing bottomend green light launch but there's more than enough oomph for spirited perfor mance and full-load hauling. Only the 5speed automatic is available in Canada but this adaptive transmission is the same one as in more expensive Volvos. MacPherson struts up front and a rear multi-link suspension in back compli ment a structurally rigid chassis. The S40 and V40 come with 15" alloy wheels and 195/60 profile tires. The interior is snug and comfortable with that indefinable air of European quality and style. Seats are smallish and aggressively bolstered. These cars are aimed squarely at small families or sin gles, so rear seating will require some compromise by front occupants. A long list of standard equipment, besides the safety features already men tioned, includes electronic climate con trol, 7-speaker AM/FM stereo, tilt steer ing, ambient temperature gauge, rear fog light, remote keyless entry with engine immobilizer, heated mirror and even a tool kit. And more. The V40 wagon also includes a removable cargo security cover with integrated shelf Volvo Canada hopes to sell a few thousand of the 40 series before the end of the year with a target goal of 3200 for the 2001 calendar year. "We look to the S40 and V40 to increase our business - not only today but in future as we bring customers into the Volvo family earlier," said Carol Kitchen. The Volvo S40 and V40 are priced at $29,995 and $30,995 respectively. The Sports Package with spoiler, foglights, premium speakers and roof rail on the V40 adds $1,100. The Touring Package ups the refinement level with power dri ver seat, leather on seats and steering wheel, simulated wood trim and wood shifter for $3000. Fully loaded versions, with sunroof and all the options, as tested, topped out at just over $38,000. Regardless of option level, the new Volvo S40 & V40 tag team offers consumers a new opportunity to move into a lineup of imported cars with a high con tent level, European sophistication and an unparalleled record of innovative safety.
