www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER |Friday, April 2 1 , 2 0 1 7 | 8 Halton Region working to finish project in shortest tim e possible continued from p.1 feedermain, between the Speers Road and Dorval Drive intersection and the Davis Road Boost er Pumping Station, at Davis Road and South Service Road East. The project will improve the security of the water supply in town and help service north Oakville. Part of the construction involves micro-tun nelling, which has begun in the tunnelling shafts situated at Hogs Back Park, near Cross Avenue and Cornwall Road, and on the opposite side of Sixteen Mile Creek on Shepherd Road. The shafts enable the tunnelling of the feedermain beneath Sixteen Mile Creek and work is expected to continue until late July. Shaft construction is happening Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., while tunnelling work will occur Monday to Saturday, 24 hours a day; That has some residents raising concerns over the noise level and traffic. Dennis said noise control methods, such as si lencing equipment, are used in the evening hours when generators and pumps will be running. "It' s important to know we do take actions to make sure our contractors control noise and light to the extent possible," said Dennis. "Considering traffic impact and noise, issues that can be generated from light at night.. .we try to balance all those things with getting the project done as quickly as possible, so we can get in and out and minimize impact on the community." Tunnelling work, which will start as soon as the shaft construction finishes, will run 24 hours a day to reduce the risk of machines getting stuck and the duration of construction, Dennis said. The Town of Oakville issued a noise exemp tion to allow the continuous tunnelling. Micro-tunnelling is a construction method the Region uses to build smaller diameter tunnels re motely, Dennis said. It is typically used for watermain or sewer projects, where construction has to take place at a considerable depth that makes open-cut exca vation difficult or if it' s occurring beneath sensi tive lands. At Hogs Back Park, the Region is dealing with both scenarios, according to Dennis. "We're able to remotely construct the tunnel and insert a liner pipe, which makes sure the tun nel is held in position so we can insert the watermain," said Dennis. The next phase of the project will see a feedermain built along Speers Road, from Dorval Drive to Kerr Street, from April through early August. Taking place Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., two lanes of traffic will be maintained on Speers Road during this time. "We're going to be working closely with busi nesses to make sure we minimize impact there, but that work will be done during the day," said Dennis. The third part of construction, beneath the rail bridge on Cross Avenue, is expected to begin in May and continue to mid-July. It will be done at night because of traffic vol ume and involve tunnelling methods and some localized lane closures on Cross Avenue. Work on Sheppard Road and Kerr Street is to start in late July and continue to mid-October. Construction will be done from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. to avoid disrupting heavy daytime traffic. The tentative completion for parts of the proj ect that will be seen by the public is November or early December, Dennis said. Work near the Davis Road Booster Pumping Station, east of Tra falgar Road, will begin in December and finish in early 2018, potentially by spring. An update on the construction will be pro vided in June. A public information session will be held Tuesday, April 25 at Town Hall, South Atrium, 1225 Trafalgar Rd. from 6-8 p.m. Need help with house-cleaning? Let us do it for you!
