And, to celebrate the occasion, a Victorian Strawberry Tea was held dur ing the Oakville Waterfront Festival by neighbours who have formed the George's Square Society. "We held the tea to celebrate the new band shell," said Marianne Hawthorne, chair of the recently formed society which aims to keep an eye on the park and its new band shell to discourage vandalism, while at the same time encouraging the public to enjoy the square. This society is a new, independent group, representing the 16 houses locat ed around the park on Sumner Avenue, Reynolds Street, Palmer Avenue and Trafalgar Road, explained Hawthorne, adding she and husband Robert moved back to the Square last year. The tea, which will be held annually, was especially romantic for Hawthorne. She renewed her vows after 33 years of Photos by Julie Fairrie marriage, and plans to do it every year. With many of the approximately 60 guests also arriving in period costume, the stage was set for the spontaneous wedding. "We will be doing this every year to celebrate the renewal of George's Square," Hawthorne continued. "We want to promote the heritage of Oakville," she said of the park's histori cal significance, adding about five of the houses around it bear historical plaques, as do several others in Oakvjlle's third Heritage District. "I was raised on Palmer Avenue, and remember playing in that old band shell as a child," said Hawthorne. "We used to bring blankets and pillows into the band shell and play all afternoon, and then go swimming in Sixteen Mile Creek." She also recalls watching the Oakville Salvation Army Band there. The Oakville Citizens Band - now the Clara Torode, 16 months, enjoys a strawberry with her dad Oakville Wind Orchestra - also played Carl Torode.
