No, not some geek-type car for the decided ly unhip. But, rather a sedan that, after 14 years as one of the world's best-selling automotive jellybeans, is finally shedding its curvy old body in favour of some new character lines and right angles. Back in 1986, the first-generation Taurus took the country by storm with its aerodynamic `invert ed soap dish' look that broke ranks with more com monly-accepted (read conservative) shapes. The resulting consumer hoopla gave Ford the top-selling-car crown, matching its F-150's lofty perch as King of the Hill (pickup truck division). Ten years later, an all-new Taurus was launched; this one added oval-shaped themes throughout, including the front and rear fascias, and especially the bizarre-looking rear window glass. Ford was clearly shooting for another break through design, but sales, although solid, failed to reach those Everest-like levels attained by the orig inal car. The King had been dethroned. This time around, Ford has decided not to fly in the face o f convention, since convention, as far as popular family sedans is concerned, seems to be in vogue these days. Thus, the 2000 Taurus approach es the new millennium as a much milder version of its former self. Mild may not be wild, but on the 2000 Taurus it is an attractive attribute. The car's former whimsi cal silhouette has been replaced by a more pur poseful and aggressive grouping of body panels and window shapes that accounts for its handsome new appearance.
