"We have been running the feis for almost a decade now," says Edwards, noting that all the Oakville organizers are volunteers. "Judges come from Dublin, Florida and Ohio...One of the musicians, who is a local man and was a teacher in the area, is going to judge the music. And one of the ladies here, her aunt is coming from Ireland. She's going to judge the soda bread." Dancers compete in Beginner, Novice, Open, Preliminary and Championship levels as well as a spe cial needs category, with the first prize winners in all but the special needs category moving up to the next level. But when the dancers reach Championship level, they become more competitive, says Edwards, not ing that their costumes as well as their foot work become more elabo rate and, consequently, more expen sive (the costumes that is) as they move up the competition ladder. "Beginners and Novice get medals; Open and up get trophies for the top three." Competition in an Irish feis can even extend beyond the stage as ven dors skillfully display their wares from photography and traditional Irish dance wear to curlers and jewelry. Edwards has two daughters who compete in the feis circuit - one as a dancer, the other as a fiddler. Kathleen, the fiddler, says she started playing violin at her mother's suggestion, beginning with classical music at first, then moving on to Irish jigs and airs. The 10-year-old has been fiddling for a year now and says she likes O akville B eaver E ntertainm ent Editor: Carol Baldwin 845-3824 (Extension 254); Fax: 337-5567: E-mail: baldwin@haltonsearch.com * Kids ready toes and bows at local feis Children as young as three honoured the Irish by dancing, fiddling and reading poetry at Oakville Feis O dancers, fiddlers, poets, and even soda bread bakers was originally ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR organized by parents of the perform ers and has continued to grow as ver 700 Irish dancers, aged dancers from across North America 3 to 21 - 120 from come to town to compete on six dif Oakville - were kicking up ferent stages. their heels at Oakville's annual Feis in Iroquois Ridge High However, Paula Edwards, parent School on Saturday. and public relations director for the Oakville Feis Association, says This one-day celebration for Irish B y C a r o l B a ld w in F f lR iS T f g Canada's favourite ANTIQUE SHOW * 300 dealers * Sat.
