C*( OPEN SUNDAYS 12-5 140 Rebecca St. OAKVILLE 844-7728 OOLD Enjoys group pieces (Continued from page B7) work o f fibre art that the members create each year to donate to a school or not-for-profit organization. This year, the wall hanging they created will be presented during the Fibre Festival at Abbozzo Gallery on Oct. 3rd, to Visions Canada, "for the special needs dog department, because it's pretty drab down there," says Davies. "We decide on a pattern, and then someone just takes it and gets started. Then the next person takes that and adds, and that's how we do our group pieces. It's actually quite fun," she adds. Davies has been quilting for eight years now, a task she took up when painting and sculpting lost its allure. "I was tired o f painting and sculpting. So I thought I'd try something new," explains Davies. "A friend of my did bed quilts, which I did not want to do, because they were repetitive.. .But it titillated me that I should try .. .1 had done photography for awhile - flowers across Ontario and Bar bados, So I started with flowers." Since then Davies has branched out when it comes to subject matter, but not when it comes to size. She has cre ated just one large quilt only to vow that it would be the last. "I had to do it in two parts because I had no frame. I had to do it on the floor, on my lap. I had to make two quilts and join them together," she recalls. "Never again." Since her quilts are all originals, Davies sketches her idea on tracing paper and then transfers that sketch to graph paper before she begins sewing. She has even been known to enlarge certain portions o f the image if she's uncertain about sewing them free hand. "W hen I have a blank piece of paper, I get so excited that I end up putting it (an item) in the wrong place. So it's better to psyche it out first so I don't make composition boo-boos," she says with a laugh. Perhaps quilting is beginning to lose its attraction, too, since Davies already has her next project in mind - wood cutting. "I have already done linos. I'll try it on wood this time," she explains. waiting for? Get up to speed. Get COGECO @Home. When it comes to speed, dial-up's just not the ticket. COGECO@Home was made for the role.
